Official Description: Aang takes Katara and Sokka to an Earthbender city to play on their delivery slides. The kids cause damage to the city and are brought before a crazy old king, who seems to enjoy messing with the kids' heads. Is the king completely insane, or could there be a method to his madness?

While this episode was a little average for me, the fight scene at the end with Bumi has got to be one of my favorites. The choreography was so good, and all of Bumi's techniques are some of the most creative attacks I've seen in the show. It really shows what a master earthbender can do. It ranks right up there with the Katara and Pakku fight.

This episode has grown on me. When I first saw it I thought it was sort of boring. Now, I really get a kick out of Bumi, and you're right, the duel at the end is really well done. It also seems this is the episode where Aang gets formally charged with his mission when Bumi tells him that the world has changed and that he must defeat Fire Lord Ozai. We get another dose of this, of course, in 1x07, but here is where the Avatar first gets his marching orders.

I also wondered why he didn't just stay and learn earthbending from Bumi. Maybe it's because he has to learn them in the specific order, but why, I wonder, must that be so?

The likely reason he didn't stay with Bumi was that he had promised Katara they would go to the North Pole to learn waterbending, and staying with Bumi would have delayed that promise. If Katara wasn't a factor, I'm sure he would have stayed. I think Aang will learn from Bumi in season 2 though. I bet it will be intense.

The is definitely my favorite episode from Season One.  Bumi is in my top three of favorite characters.  Yes, the duel at the end between Aang and Bumi is magnificent.  However, I really enjoyed seeing Aang find one of his friends again....someone who had not only survived the war thus far, but had thrived and become the King of Omashu and was still "a mad genius."  And, I have to admit that I am a sucker for an happy ending...so I loved the hug between Aang and Bumi.  I also thought that they ended it perfectly, with Aang and Bumi hurtling down the mail chutes and into that poor cabbage vendor's cabbages.

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Bumi created that mud or gooey monster thing.
(whatever you call it)
 That was very cool.

But why does Bumi wear so many rings?

This episode is actually one of my favorites, and I made King Bumi as one of my favorite characters of the show due to his wits, eccentricness, humor and powers that he has. The pre-fight jokes were very fun.

Also, to answer Wikipedia's citation needed on King Bumi's profile, yes, Bumi is the word for Earth in Malaysian and Indonesian language. I should know, I'm a Malaysian. Smiley

after watching "the dessert" from season 2, i would have thought soka would have figured out the rock candy thing in no time, due to his "natural curiosity"

Well, Sokka might have been freaked by the rock candy thing growing on his body to wonder if it was eatable or not.

When i first saw this, i thought the King was out of his mind, i mean, why make Aang do all those insane things like get a lunch box key from a waterfall? This episode was well done and also, it has one of my favorite sub-characters, The Cabbage Guy!  Grin

It occurred to me, re-watching this episode the other day, that there is a very Monty Python-esque quality to the dialogue about the "recently refurbished chamber." It's very easy to imagine all of Bumi's lines spoken by John Cleese or Eric Idle.

I loved this episode, one of the rare few I actually got to watch on TV.  Not JUST because of the fight scene, which effin' rocked btw, but also because we got a glimpse into Aang's past.  We learned a little more of what Aang misses most about his first child hood.  Also, King Bumi was hilarious!  But I can't imagine him as the stupid Monty Python guy.

This episode rocks!  Straight from the transcript:

Sokka: Why did you do all this instead of just telling Aang who you were?
King Bumi: First of all, it's pretty fun messing with people, hehe (snort! snort!)

King Bumi is so cool!

Great episode but not my favorite...the fight in the end was awesome but i still wonder why Aang chose to fight Bumi if Bumi only gave him two choices....

It was great that the cabbage merchant was in this episode...

It's been such a long time since I watched this episode, and I've come to be so fond of the Cabbage Guy (and to feel sorry for him), that I was slightly shocked when I reencountered his barbarous demand for punishment.

"Off with their heads!"

Get a grip Cabbagy!  I know business is tough and the fates have it in for you!  But capital punishment for the destruction of produce??

Tsk tsk, he's not my favorite secondary character anymore.

Which is why i think the creators love to torment him. Perhaps the Avatar Spirit heard him and went: "Okay, we'll torment YOU for every head of cabbage!"

I really, really like this episode, but it's a guilty pleasure, since it's the most embarassing episode to get caught watching by my Avatar hating sister. A few months ago, I was watching it when this happened:

My Sister: *walks in and sees the end of Aang's first task with Bumi's crazy snorting* WTF?!
Me: Oh... heh heh... yeah... this is a really weird episode...
Sister: Yeah, no sh**.
Me: *blushes and quickly changes the channel*
Sister: o_0... Whatever... *leaves*
Me: ... >.> ... <.< ... *changes the channel back*

Cheesy
