I think what I liked the most about this episode, aside from the excellent animation of the Agni Kai fighting scenes (the movements just flow so naturally!), was Aang's experience at the temple. How he has happy flashbacks about Gyatso and the pie-throwing, how he seems to accept that he needs to learn about being the Avatar, how they're all impressed at the many, many, many Avatar statues in the sanctuary, and last but certainly not least, his reaction upon finding Gyatso's skeleton. It has got to be quite a shocking experience for a child to find out in such a gruesome way that his father-figure has died a terrible death. His grief is palpable, falling down on the floor and holding his head while crying. His anguish and anger when he goes glowy, and the way Katara soothed and comforted him. It's a very emotional episode. Maybe not the best episode in the series, but it's certainly way up there.
hmm, maybe i should go and write an episode review about this one

I agree with you in the emotion factor of this episode. However, there is only one real reason I'd watch it over and over:Shirtless Zuko.

..I love Zuko. This episode's my second favorite and I watch it all the time on my dvds. Lol.
I pushed my older brother down and he did that little Zuko-flippy thingy and knocked my down. It really hurt! And he never even saw that episode! I was like, "Wtf how'd you do that!!??11THREE1!!"

Pretty cool your brother is going to have to teach me that move. Another reason i like this episode is the fighting sequences they're just awsome.

i loved basically every aspect of this. the music as aang was going into the avatar state; the agni kai; everything.
however, the reason i gave it a 9was because of one major plot loophole: aang doesn't realize that the FN has been there before until he sees gyatso's dead body.
but shouldn't he have realized a long time ago when nobody runs up to greet him when the gAang arrives? or the lack of any life? 0.o
well anyways.. as i said before, a 9 from me

Of course the Zuko fight scene is the best bit about this episode. Not only is it kick-ass its also the first real time we see Zuko outside of his angry/evil jerk with ponytail when he spares Zhao. Also background to Aang is alright and I love the glowy bit with all those temple sages going "the avatar has returns" excellent background music.

Well, elsewhere from this forum. I've read that Monk Gyatso too had a white lotus tile, the same one like Iroh and Piandao had. It said, it was around Monk Gyatso's dead body. Did any of you guys notice it? I've watched the episode once more. But I've not found it..

yow, Zuko is not who you guys think he is, he is just the angry/evil jerk because of his father, Zuko wanted him to accept him the way he was but he didn't, he 'll get sick of it over time, and eventually let it go.

I thought that this episode was a big milestone for Avatar. For most people, it was the sophomoric impression of the show, proof that Mike and Bryan could keep their thing going after the premiere had sunk into people's minds. And, it did. Awesome blend of action with emotion. Oh, and milestone for Nickelodeon for showing dead bodies.

Rated this 8/10. As everyone says, the Agni Kai was the best. I also liked the parts where they go to the sanctuary and when they find Momo.

So much had happened in this episode, and it is spectacular! This is an episode that can make someone a Avatard easily! xD Aang's rage was justified. His loss was bigger than anyone else on the show. I don't like kataang, but at least Katara managed to calm down Aang. Anyways, great episode, and I suggest it for everyone!

This episode shows how defined M&B are with building characters. Only the third episode, and already we know the character's personalities, and we have a great sympathy for each of them.

Now that we know Gyatso and Roku were friends, its great to revisit this episode, especially the part where Gyatso obliquely tells Aang that Roku would help answer his questions. There's something John Connor-ish about the whole scenario. Its great to revisit this episode, especially the part where Gyatso obliquely tells Aang that Roku would help answer his questions.
