what's the worst thing that could happen?

Thought I'd break out some vector action.  Progress shots and a detail zoom on deviantart

If anybody has requests, I'd definitely consider taking them on.  Hopefully at some point I'll be familiar enough to crank out whatever I want, but for now only things with a source image/sketch please.

edit: ooh, attachments

Vector work is fun. Cartoon vectors are easy though, think about vectoring a real person [dies] LMAO. Love the work. Looks exactly like Kitara ^__^ Keep it up!

Actually, I have been thinking about people.  I'm working on a just for fun piece that will probably never see the light of day, but it's been pretty educational so far, and I've barely started.  I'll try to come back here and fill in any insights, but I think a key part is relatively simple shadows, and using them to fully convey depth.  Just pause Avatar and check out their work; generally speaking, the characters are flat, with a single level of shadow that's full of all sorts of curves to help show various shapes.  (you could successfully argue that the line work provides a second level of shadow, and that's part of what I'm exploring with the lineless zuko I'm currently working on)

Naturally, there are many different ways to convey things with vector art: cartoony, more towards anime, somewhat abstract, photorealistic, really just about anything if you're willing to thow enough paths at it.  A fun thing to do is to take a bitmap and run it through a vectorizing thingy.  Generally, it'll reduce the image to a set number of colors, and then go through and draw a big vector blob for each one, and overlay them over each other to make the final image.  It comes out looking pretty cool, and comparing the various layers to the original image can be enlightening.  (if only about how the vectorizer works sometimes)  Ok, enough chat, back to work for me.

Hey tyroney, fancy seeing you here. =)

I love the vector stuff. It's amazing. I can't wait to see more of it.

Finished off Zuko.

Next it'll probably be Sokka.  Hoping that one will be fairly original.  If I'm not careful, I might have to go and get myself a tablet.
