Hey there, it's been a while...

I really enjoyed seeing some of the rougher ideas for the show. That cgi sequence (Momo flying through the scaffolding) was really out of place, I'm really glad that got the axe.

Did anyone else love Aangs attitude in the pilot? Throwing himself into the air to purposefully trigger the Avatar state was awesome.

I believe they originally intended to do that in every episode...

Zach Tyler Eisen is a better voice for aang than mitchell musso...

And I discovered there are Kataang--or should I say Kyaang scenes already...

Kya is not really cute than the real episodes here... I don't know why but I don't like her appearance right here...

Anyway, I love the pilot!

@kawaiijolina: Are you the same kawaii.jolina that I know in KHQ? You know me in KHQ as ukiya_seed if assuming you are that kawaiijolina...
Based on the look of the first Fire Nation armor... better watch this! I only just seen the screenshots I better give a shot on this...

P.S. What DVD volume of Season One where can I see the Original Pilot?

I liked that they changed her name to Kataara, and even more the fact that they got a new voice actor for Aang! Wink. The group needed more variety name-wise.

Aang: 1 syllable
Toph: 1 syllable
Zuko: 2 syllables
Iroh: 2 syllables
Sukki: 2 syllables
Kya: 2 syllables... wait, how about. Kataara! Yayyyy 3 syllables Cheesy

LOL. I am. nice to see you here!

As for the DVD, pilot ep is not aired anywhere, right? I watched this on youtube, but hardly understood it because mike and bryan are talking in the background. =(

I don't know why, but after watching the unaired pilot, I keep getting the feeling that if Bryke had gone with that one instead of the Boy in the Iceberg, that the series would have turned out alot darker.

It may have been the lighting theme that suggested this; in TBITI, the setting was relatively daytime and featured blue skies and penguin sledding. In contrast, the unaired episode featured a sunset, which visually darkened the overall setting. This emphasized Zuko's "evilness", if you will, and made him seem to be much more thwarted on... something. He never quite said that he was out to capture the Avatar, did he (I may not have heard him say it, though, over Bryke's commentary)? With the panshot of him standing and looking at the sun, he seemed alot more sinister than when he was looking at the awakening of the Avatar in TBITI.

Also. In the beginning, we're shown the serpent attacking the Gaang. Later in the episode, we see that the serpent's head has been cut off and shown on a large cart. Though the serpent was shown as a villian/sea monster, it was killed in the first ep. That may be just a little suggestive there.

According to Bryke, the statue that had been unfinished was one of the Avatar. The Fire Nation had been remodeling it to look like Ozai. Before they explained this, however, I kept getting the idea that it was a Ramses statue or something. I couldn't quite tell what it was, because there was no arrow tattooed on the guy's forehead (or was there? Bad quality of a video...?). Ramses + Children's cartoon = No no.

But overall, if this pilot had been aired, I think the show would have turned out to be much darker. Some of the things I pointed out may have been the reason why TBITI was more accepted as a pilot than this one. And, TBITI seemed to have a much grander opening to what the Avatar series was all about, and how powerful the Avatar truly was. I liked it just the same because it gave much more of an opening, as well as a chance to explore what sort of world Avatar really was.

Mmm.... yup. I think that's it.

EDIT: Oh, wait. One more thing.

In the unaired pilot, Katara's original name was Kya. Can anyone tell me what her mother's name was now? Hmmm? Hmmmmmmm?

Maybe Bryke couldn't think of a name so they called Katara's mom Kya...

Or was Katara Kya the Second?

Most probably. Cheesy Because only avatar fans would know that significance of that name.

It would have been interesting for Zuko to have a Hawk. Hawky then migrated over to Sokka in the third season when Zuko fell on him Cheesy

The voice of Aang in the pilot is done by some kid named Mitchell Musso, right? Isn't that the kid who just made it to the top 40 music charts?

I'm glad they switched studios because I think the characters looked a lot better in the actual series.

positives:
-nice balance of action and humor
-Sokka was great "Stupid short Fire Nation rope!" Cheesy
-good fight choreography
-showing the lion turtle statue in the intro

negatives:
-Aang forcing himself into the Avatar State
-the Fire Nation uniforms looked terrible
-something about Katara/Kya annoyed me
-Zuko was a bit too angry (even for Zuko)
-Appa didn't get to really do anything

rating (out of 10): 6

This one is hard to rate, since it's not part of the actual series.

I've only seen this episode ~snip~ with Mike and Bryan commentating... it drove me nuts cuz I couldn't hear anything. Is there anywhere else that the episode is posted without the commentating?

Please do not discuss on illegal episode viewing. Thank you. ~Icy

The the forum rules states that discussing about illegal episode viewing is prohibited. Please refrain from doing so again.

This pilot episode comes with commentary all along if you buy the Season 1 boxset. To my knowledge, there is no pilot episode available that comes without the commentary. If you turn your volume high enough, you'll be able to hear the characters speak.

Apparently you get get the pilot episode WITHOUT COMMENTARY on iTunes if you buy the whole season or something.  I don't know how long that's been around, but I just noticed it.

really? does anyone have this to confirm it?

EDIT: i just checked itunes and it appears this is true. u dont have to buy the whole season though. just the season 1 essentials collection. its $11.99 and includes 8 season 1 episodes plus the pilot with and without commentary. might have to get it eventually. looks like the episode transcribers here have a new task.
