I was watching Avatar extras.

Two of the pop ups interested me.

It said that at 6 years old, Aang was a better airbender than kids twice his age. So 6 year old Aang> 12 year old average Airbender. Meaning that 6 year old Aang>5 year old Meelo, 7 year old Ikki, and 10 year old Jinora.

Then at 10 years old, Aang was even better than his teachers.

Does this mean that 10 year old Aang> Gyasto? If not, who were Aang's "teachers"? We only see a few old men in the Southern Air temple and never saw any age groups. We never even saw Teenager airbenders.

Does this also mean 10 year old Aang> 51 year old Tenzin?

Thoughts?

Teenagers and adults are nomadic. The temples are mostly for raising children. They're called air nomads for a reason.
Not that this answers the question...

It doesn't. Not even close.

No. A 10 year old Aang was no master.

As good as he was, Tenzin would probably still win a duel.

Well, we don't actually know WHEN Aang got his tattoos.

All we know is that by the age of 12, Aang was already a master.

For all we know, he could have earned his tattoos at 10 or 11 years old.

That's just wrong. Air nomads don't fight. They're monks. Philosophers. They discuss ideas, not break bones. The most electrifying scene you can probably get from them is some spicy discourse on the real nature of Koh the Face Stealer in the middle of pai-sho game.

What I mean is:
-We cannot think that powerful airbender = great Air Nomad. Aang surely was great bender, but in the begging he hadn't grasped even the basics of spirituality.

Getting tattoos = mastering movesets. Mastering bending itself is a far more difficult issue that can be only done with experience. So no, 10 year old Aang has no chance to beat 51 year old Tenzin. I actually have no idea how you could think that. If we go by the theory that Aang advances twice as fast in general than anyone else, he'd still need to be at least 25 to beat Tenzin in an aribending match. Also, show me where it is said or implied that 10 year old Aang was better than Gyatso. Honestly, I think that's outright impossible because like I mentioned, bending needs experience. You don't just miraculously know when to use what moves when you learn a martial art. Bending is the same. Aang at 12 was probably as good as others at 20. The reason why I didn't multiply his age by 2 is what I mentioned before: lack of experience. Would he put up nearly an equal fight with airbenders around 25 years? Sure. Would he win? I refuse to believe that.
