As stated, some names would sound fine in English: Korra, Katara, heck I KNOW a Jet. And since my girlfriend is Chinese, that'd expand my name list quite a bit.

Would I name a child after avatar? You bet your blue knee high socks I would. Would I let anybody ever know the name came from a children's cartoon? Not in a million years...

I think the closest I would come is Sapphire after Katara's "alter ego"

I actually met someone a couple weeks ago who's daughter was named Katara.  I didn't want to ask, but....  It felt awkward though.

I love this topic. I love the name Zuko so that would probably be an option. An for a girl I'd love to call her Mai, though there is an adventage there. You can write it as Mae but you call it the same. It would be great, If I have children one day to call them after those two characters!

Zuko doesn't sound weird so I don't see why not.

Gee idk. Great question....if I had a girl maybe Mai would be cool. I also think Katara is a really nice name. All the guy names though, I'll pass on. I'd never want my kid to grow up with a name like Sokka. Jeezus, I'd hate to be that kid during high school. Tongue

There's a few relatives back in my family tree named Korra, so I might be able to get away with naming a future daughter that if I tried. Cheesy

I think I would! Well Jinora is cute and reminds me of that Janina name from Pokemon.

I had a great-grandmother named Kora, but I don't think I'd name a child after a character. "May" or "Mei" is the furthest I'd go.

Will your kid be an old soul? It sounds a lot like 'nonno.'

And I just realised Appa can sound like O-pa...

Well, I met a girl called Suki today. It's a nice name - I'd consider naming my child Suki.

I think naming my son/daughter like a cartoon character will only get me a concerned stare from my wife.

I might twist the names to make them more American-sounding. Mai - May. Ty Lee - Tylie. Or Kylie even. I'd have to think about it.

I really like unique names and Avatar has plenty. There are a lot of usable names, but Avatar has given me the idea more than anything, so I might just come up with my own cool name.

I really like unusual names but I also agree with twisting these because I wouldn't want my child to one day learn about it and think I named them after a lame character. Obviously, "Azula" as name wouldn't worry me in this regard but the madness part might be a bit troublesome. Anyway, I've always thought May was a nice name and also Kya is pronounced like a nickname (for several names) in my country so it would work.

I would consider naming a kid after an Avatar character because I've always liked unique names and I do like some of the names from Avatar. If I did though, I'd try and pick names that aren't embarrassing, obvious or too complicated. For a girl I would use Kya probably, but I don't think there's any other ATLA female names I would use. For boys though, I like the names Hakoda (could be called "Kody" for short, which isn't terribly unusual), or Teo (which sounds kind of like "Theo"), or even Roku or Iroh, just because I like how they sound.

I consider it a definite possibility. I like unique names that have a meaning to them and aren't just a combination of random letters (and sometimes numbers) or a combination of 2 names. Avatar is very important to my life and helped me through tough times. If I did use an Avatar name, I'd use the name Zuko. I think Zuko would be a great role model and he's an amazing character. I identified with him the most from the very beginning. As Avatar gets older, it's likely going to get more and more obscure so I don't think a lot of people would recognize the name. It's short, unique, inspiring, and easy-to-pronounce, so there are some definite benefits. Plus, the nickname could be Zu, which just sounds cute and cool. Maybe Zu-Zu would even work as a nickname when they're younger.
A lot of people worry about children getting teased for their names. Well, every child gets bullied sometime in their life, and if it's for their cool name then the bully is just an idiot. It's nearly impossible to avoid names, even normal ones, that can't be made into jokes. I know people named Daniel who are called Daniel-San non-stop and some kids managed to make Richard sound like retard.
If I did name my kid after Avatar, I wouldn't try to force it on them. I think Zuko, and lots of other characters, teach great lessons about strength and doing the right thing, but the name is great even without the show. I just love the sound of it and it has great meanings in several languages. Plus, if the kid didn't like Avatar, he could say he's named after Grease.
Maybe it will just be a middle name.

You'd be surprised how many kids can recognize a wax-on wax-off joke, too. Karate Kid is a classic.

I can see the interaction.

"Dad."

"Yes, son ?"

"Did you just name me after a character in a show ? I looked it up with Google and-"

"Shhh, Ozai, your mom was okay with it so stop whining."

Yeah, I can see that being a problem. It'd be worse, like what you said, if they were named after a villain (a permanent villain). But I think there would be a lot of cool things to it as well. The name Zuko is just awesome, and I'd love it even without seeing the show. I just love how it sounds and it has great meanings in tons of languages. Add the fact that it's tied to one of the best written characters ever, and it's pretty great.

I'd never name my kid Zuko because I'd be afraid people would think I named him after Danny Zuko from Grease and I hate Grease. :/

That may be a problem, but who cares about Grease nowadays? But it the kid liked Grease more than Avatar, he can tell people that's where his name is from. I love Avatar, but if he doesn't I'd be totally fine with it.
