Does anyone know who Asami is?  With all the talk about her, it seems like she would be as important in Korra as Mako and Brolin, but she was not mentioned in the panel.   Did they give any indication as to her identity, and what role she will play in Korra?

Thread title changed to indicate that Hiroshi Sato should also be discussed in this thread. ~SMBH

Asami is the daughter of Oman who switches sides to valiantly aid Korra in keeping the balance.

Or she's a random girl who just shows up to say a line about beliefs. Who knows?

We don't know, she was on a list of characters confirmed a few months back nothing further has been said.  The main reason for the talk is a lack of non-Korra teenage females to ship.

I am thinking that she is going to be an important character, more so in the second half.
The panel didn't have a spot for her though, so she wasn't discussed. They only talked about Korra's concept, Kataang descendants, equalists, and metalbender cops.

Or maybe they just want to keep some things secret. Who knows?

Who ever she is, I am really excited to see her.

Maybe Asami is the name of Toph's daughter? Maybe she's just something they wanted to keep secret?

I think Asami is Tenzin's sister. That sounds like a name Aang and Katara would name their kid. But idk. We'll find out who she is eventually.

Remember, guys, she's being voiced by Seychelle Gabriel. She's most likely a teen or young adult.

Maybe Asami is the name of Toph's daughter?

Her name is Bei Fong.

She's obviously Mako's jealous girlfriend.

^^I assume she's called by her last name, Bei Fong. Not her mystery first name.

^^That's sort of what I think.  I think Mako/Asami will happen eventually.

If she does have a first name, it won't be Asami. Bei Fong is at least in her 40s and Asami is voiced by a teenager, so Asami will most likely be a young character.

I am sure they are not gonna get a 20 year old Seychelle Gabriel to voice a 40 year old Chief Bei Fong. Tongue
Korra is 17 according to the panel, and Mako and Bolin are near that age also.
I am sure Asami will be in their age group. And she would make a great non-bender 4th addition to the team in the second half of episodes. Grin

My ideas:
I like the idea of Asami being a mechanic in United Republic with ancestry from the NWT. Her physical appearance consists of auburn hair (with hair loopies), tanned skin, and deep blue eyes.

Some clues about Asami may be gleaned from her name.   The Japanese meaning can either be (morning beauty) (hemp beauty) or (morning sea).  As we know Tenzin has three kids and who they are, we can assume with much assurity that Asami is not an Airbender.  I think we can also rule her out as being a Firebender, as none of the name meanings have connection with fire.  While hemp could signal a connection with Earth, I am 75% sure that Asami is a Water Bender, or comes from the Water Tribes, as I think morning sea would make a great translation on the name.

I think Asami will just be a citizen of UR and not be confirmed to have any other nation.

Well that depends on if United Republic is its own nation or not.

I think you would be free to keep your nationality in a place like United Republic, assuming they don't force you to assimiliate to their culture.

... what culture is that, exactly?

That's a good question.   I imagine the culture would be something to do with Metalbending, if I had to guess.

I could see parents wanting to raise their kids as just citizens of UR so they can fit in with others more easily.

Good point.  Sort of like if kids immigrate to the United States and while being Americans, are still taught about their cultures and traditions.   It could be the same of United Republic, where kids are taught of the bending arts and the four nations, but are citizens of the Republic.

Well it depends on if you are steeped in the traditions of your home country or not.
