Well I don't have too many avatar related graphics, but I spent the whole day at home sick and bored so I created a few so I could at least start a topic. I'm still figuring out how to play around in pixelmator... its ability to color things is not as good as photoshop but that might just be because I haven't figured everything out yet.

I actually think that these are beautiful.  They have a shine to them that is very unique.  I also adore the crispness of the coloring.  The first icon in the second row is probably my favorite.  It's very sharp, in a good way.   My only bit of advice would be to be careful about covering the screenshot too much.  Try to make the texture seem subtle.

These are stunning, though.  I can't wait to see what else you create.

Thanks for the comments. You're right, texturing the image can be really tricky. Usually I don't texture too much, but its nice to branch out every now and again.

Again, thanks for the praise. Coloring is always what I spend the most time working on,  probably the most important aspect along with cropping. Particle Effects/Brushing usually doesn't take long.

These are all just amazing!   I love the coloring on them all!  You can get so much emotion across in just the colors.

My favorite, if I had to choose, would probably be the Moku one, for it's gorgeousness and "Nope".   Best part of that episode, seriously.

@guitarfreak: For the zuko one, I pretty much used the simplest technique possible. Duplicate the image, set it to overlay and then blur it a bit. After that I just put a solid color on top of it and put it on soft light. Thanks for the compliments though.

Just curious, but what program do you use? Like, Photoshop, GIMP, other...?

Thanks! I love that one too.. its funny because it was probably the simplest to make!

I usually use photoshop. For stuff that doesn't require much actual editing I use pixelmator (Mac only)... and pretty much all of these were done in that program except for the Azula one, which was done in PS.

Trust me, you don't need photoshop to make good icons. Whatever program you use mostly needs: filters (good blur options are critical), blending modes! , curve editing (overlooked but powerful and simple to make either subtle or drastic changes to the coloring... the aang one you mentioned is a great example), exposure + gamma editing, color balance, gradients, layer + clipping masks, and brushes.

It really isn't all that much when you think about it. The rest is up to the creativity of the artist. If that all sounded like gibberish.. I understand. I never formally learned what many of those things actually are, I just know how and when to use them by this point

But if you want to go more hardcore with cropping them out and creating textured backgrounds with shapes and all it is a better idea to use photoshop.

The GIMP is great, once you get used to it.

Navigating Photoshop... its pretty horrible when you first get it. It took me more than a year to pretty much learn what half the things did

I had to do a school project using GIMP a year or two ago, but that was before I actually decided to learn to use it, so only one or two kids in the class could actually use it. Now I can get around pretty well with it, but I'm still a beginner.

@gf That screenshot of Aang was IMPOSSIBLE to work with. The only reason I persevered is his expression is just so great, haha. The sparkly background helped a lot, but I had to really edit the exposure to make the whole thing look "alive"

Since you mentioned it, I have to say that I love playing with the curves when I edit colors.

Anyway, I have a hard time picking favorites out of your icons, because they're all different styles from each other.  Out of these latest four I have it narrowed down to the last three, and that's probably just because I'm not a fan of Katara.

I love 1 and 2. They're so pretty, and 'darken' really worked for #2 [if that's what you used ].
These are very nice icons, and I just really love the colors!

I love all those icons - the coloring's great!  My favorite would have to be the The Boulder one.  Really like the coloring, crop and screenshot.

And I like the monochromatic sig, even though I'm not one for monochrome.
