Hi hi!

Free Comic Book Day has been updating their website with many of the titles that will be offered for next year. One of them is an Avatar the Last Airbender/Star Wars combination (flip book) by Dark Horse. The cover art is the same promotional art we saw before The Serpent's Pass. Is this offering to test the market before offering a Nickelodeoon Magazine comics collection? Perhaps it will be the start of new canon stories or a recap of the series to help promote The Legend of Korra. What do you think? Are you excited to see Dark Horse behind this?

Ah you beat me to it... Hopefully this leads to a collection of the Nick magazine and DVD insert comics. Those are such a pain to find! I wonder who's drawing it...?

Eh, nothing good Google-Fu can't cure.

I wonder who's drawing it...?

If it's new (and I doubt it), it will be one of Dark Horse's cheap staff artists. Otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten old promotional art for the cover.

Way to stay positive. I can't think of any DH artists I'd label "cheap" and their well of artists certainly runs deeper than that of Nick Magazine so I expect if they are doing a new story the artwork will be at least on par with the previous comics. In regards to the cover, it's pretty standard for comic adaptations of liscensed material to re-run previously used images in order to coax mainstream fans into the comic shop. Look at the flipside Clone Wars cover, that same image is being used to promote next week’s theatrical screenings of the new story arc.

Really? Then you haven't read any of their Star Wars stuff, which features artists ranging from FANTASTIC to fill-in putzes who have a problem keeping major character on-model. Of course, as their wider product offering is examined, we see the typical range offered by the comics industry, which means there are plenty of lousy people submitting art who are valued for nothing but their ability to turn in work on time.

Yes, it does look like Dark Horse is completely cheaping out on its FCBD stuff this year. But anything will be better than that odd and unsatisfying "Emily the Strange" thing from last year (although the "Usagi Yojimbo" short was pretty cool).

i love comics, but i agree with loopy. some people might look at the lesser known artists as fill ins, but you gotta get experience somewhere right?

i am one of the avatar fans that really liked the nick magazines comics. true it is geared towards all ages, but the art is eye candy and the stories were confirmed to be canon. so even if they were silly stories about aang sneezing, or sokka pretending to be the avatar to impress a girl, they were still more morsels for us to enjoy Cheesy

so, i fully support a collection of nick magazine comics (if that is what the preview on FCBD is about) there were so many that were never seen and really deserve to be seen <3

this is a relevant enough detail that i feel a bump is necessary.

i completely snoozed on highlighting the fact that this offering is a GOLD sponsor title. comic book store owners must promise to purchase these books in order to participate in the event. im not talking about purchasing the free comics, im talking about whatever the free comic teaser is promoting.

so, if retailers need to make a commitment to the Avatar the Last Airbender title, it makes me think that Dark Horse has put together something interesting enough to place it under gold sponsorship. i do not know how that works with 'flip books'. retailers may have the option of picking one title to carry over the other. im waiting for my comic book store owning buddy to clarify that for me...

Gold sponsored titles must be bought for their comic stores for the retailer to participate in the promotion
Silver sponsored titles do not need a commitment to buy for the promotion Smiley

*hopefully i have that correct*

This is only going to be online or is it going to be published like normal comics?  That's one thing I'm wondering.

Free Comic Book Day is a real, paper, published comic that you can hold in your hand. What follows, if anything, is a complete mystery.

Eh, most Star Wars fans don't really go for this type of thing. The stuff from the major publishers typically last beyond FCBD. One of my local shops was still giving away issues a week later.

The FCBD website has updated their descriptions. Based on the information below it sounds like they're reprinting some of the Nickelodeon Magazine comics. I never found the issue with the Gurihiru illustrated story (though they showed me the page proofs at SDCC 2009) so I'm happy. And Johane Matte (aka rufftoon) did many stories so hopefully it's one I don't have yet.

Quote
(W) Johane Matte, J. Torres, Ryder Wyndam (A) Johane Matte, Gurihiru, Ben Dewey
Dark Horse is thrilled to bring to readers of all ages Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Both FCBD stories are excellent entry points to these wonderfully charming and imaginative worlds!
o A spin-off television miniseries Avatar: Legend of Korra will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011!

Looking at my comic scans, J Torres did "Dirty is only Skin Deep" and rufftoon is only ever credited as a co-writer (and never co-wrote with Torres), so either this is something new, or else it's one of the Nick Mag comics that went uncredited (at least in the comic itself, the greater Nick Mag issue may have contained credits).

Anyone know if there's an online list with complete credits?

EDIT: For the record, I asked rufftoon whether it was reprints or new stuff via her dA account, and she said she was bound by an NDA yet. I can see arguments for either, based on her answer, but if it's new, I'm disappointed that we aren't getting new blood.

great eye colin!

as stated before, this could be 'old' comics made for Nick Magazine that we have never seen (a few examples) or new stuff. there are pros and cons to both obviously. many of the more seasoned fans, who want a little more maturity in their comics won't find it in the Nick Magazine offerings, but in the later 'never before seen' comics, there was more sophistication that the older fan will appreciate very much! for example; there was an amazing comics between azula and zuko on ember island in what appeared to be an arcade. the game they were playing was powered by fire bending steampunk style. i would have LOVED to have seen that make print here. this is one of the major reasons so many were bummed when they were never printed for the U.S...so much potential

in my opinion, a new offering without giving the audience the examples we haven't seen leaves out some of the story, and isn't tremendously cost effective (especially for the struggling comic industry right now) there are many ATLA comics that are finished or practically finished, and ready for a host publication. what a waste of time, money and talent never to show them to one of the largest audiences.

also, you will notice there are even more juvenile comic titles being released in general. the children sections of many of your local comic books stores might even expand. kids are buying comics, and they are being introduced to them by their nerd mommies and daddies. in a time when people are digitally downloading them to their technological hand held wonders, younger geeklings are still reaching for print and paper. also, comic book companies are talking about/or have dropped their single issue pricing. i personally buy more comics for my minions than myself. bringing avatar the last airbender into the comic game now is perfect timing.

if the FCBD example(s) are the nickelodeon magazine comics, this doesnt mean fans will get nothing more out of the title. as popularity grows, perhaps NEW comics will be set into motion. i have a strong feeling it could happen. does this mean i want to see avatar the last airbender sitting on the shelf next to archie? well, why not? the nick magazine comics were a MUCH MUCH better offering than the outright retelling of the story in the tokyo pop manga. the only thing i would ever be worried about is mike and bryan not having control over the story. so far they have given their blessings to the atla comics, making sure they were acceptable canon...

remember, this is a gold sponsored comic. dark horse has plans to push avatar forward. do i want to see new material in the comics? yes, of course, but just like the comics i love now, if i don't support it to a small extent, it will be gone and people will move on. im not a die hard 'live and breathe' comics fan (i wish!) i could not tell you word for word what count dooku said in open seasons jango fett... but, i do buy comics, and lately, nothing has impressed me phenomenally to buy single issues as they come out. i support indy stuff, but not another weird retelling of the hulk story that i don't dig. it just makes me ask my friends for the 'hit points' while i wait.

basically, its a risky time, avatar has always been hard to market because of its wide appeal, and the Nick Magazines comics already have some strong love behind them, both in the fandom and by professionals. Granted, they dont have ALL the love of the fandom behind them.

Do you want me to type it all out for you? I love that one.

I'll be supporting whatever Dark Horse puts out, even if it's reprints (because I kind of feel a little guilty for owning scans of everything in the Nick Mags), but I really hope the opportunity gets taken seriously and we get the ideal vision of Avatar- a mature story that appeals to all ages with plenty of humor and darkness and violence and shipping. A little nudity wouldn't be amiss, either; I'm never going to procreate and don't care about protecting the kiddies.
