Well I feel dumb now. Sorry about that Tongue

Name: Hona

Nation: Earth/Water. She lives relatively close to the Swamp area, but I'm not exactly sure where that is

Bender: Plant bending

Eyes: brown

Hair: originally brown, dyed jet black (due to writing ink and a curious mind). Long beyond her waist but very wavy.

Clothing: A strapless green tea colored jumpsuit. Light, bouncy material.

Height/Weight: A smidge taller than Katara, she's very dainty though.

Weapon: Err, do seeds count as weapons? What I mean is that the only thing she's really mastered is forcing plants to speed up their growth and be used to her advantage.

Skill Level: Good at being resourceful, is able to identify and search for edible fruits and vegetables in the wild and create many useful tools out of tree-roots etc. Fighting? Not so much. Recently learned how to wrap a plant vine around someone's leg

Flaws: A little bit sheltered. Perfectionist.  Fairly superficial. She prioritizes her looks more than anything. Never lets people see her without her hair done, makeup on, counts her "calories", all that good stuff.

Family: Just her mother, Soilia (Soh-eelee-ah); her father is not present but his name, Ahn-Roh, comes up a few times.

History: Hona is a child of rape. Her mother, Soilia, was raped by drunk named Ahn-Roh who had seen her around a few times. Soilia went on this terrible downward spiral of isolation, compulsive cleaning, and severe depression for a long time until she learned that she was pregnant with a baby girl. With Hona's birth, Soilia turned into a complete control freak as all she yearned for was control in her life. Something that was taken from her by Ahn-Roh. Hona did experience a good and wholesome childhood and Soilia loved her very much, but Soilia wanted her daughter to be absolutely perfect as a form of revenge to her rapist and a form of comfort for herself. An important aspect of Hona's life is her mother's extravagant Salon/Spa/Fitness center which was frequented by all the locals and visited by people all over the world. Hona is used as a resource for most of the organic face masks and ingredients for special treatments of the salon/spa/fitness center. Her mother, beauty-obsessed, began counting Hona's calories, berating her for not exfoliating, punishing her for zits, and displaying disappointment when Hona was unable to provide for her properly. She was paraded around the salon and boasted about to clients, but behind closed doors, there was a very toxic relationship between the two. Hona sought to please her mother and make up for such a terrible way to be conceived, but Soilia was on a mission to make her daughter be the definition of perfection.

^ From the sounds of it, she seems to be a deconstruction of a mary-sue. Judging from her relationship with her mother at least. The thing is, any character has the potential to become a mary sue because that title is based on how your audience thinks of them as well as your own ability in writing them in a believable and realistic way.

I had to admit, I was a little off-put by how she was just a child of rape because at first it seemed like it was thrown in for shock value. But as I read the history, I think you did very well in making it part of the identity her mother wants Hona to embody.

For my new Fanfic, I have had to draft up a ton of original characters in order to service the story line I have in mind. Here are three for now.

Name: Yuandao
Nation: Fire Nation.
Bender: Yes. He is a firebender.
Eyes: Dark brown.
Hair: Black.
Clothing: Yuandao for the most wears a basic Fire Nation military uniform. Though, he later trades it for priestly robes [think Fire sages] when he embraces his heritage.
Height/Weight: He is of average height and weight, though like most people in the show he has a muscular build. Though, he later becomes thin and lanky.
Weapon: No.
Skill level: At the story’s onset, he is rather average but, he later acquires mastery of his element, or at least enough to make his final confrontation with Azulon interesting.
Flaws: Yuandao in the beginning of the story is a bit of a good natured rogue, whose various shenanigans and exploits have gained him many enemies both within and out his household. He is rather irresponsible, especially with money and impious, in that he neglects his duties as a member of a priestly family [not observing the various customs and sacred rites that he is entailed to do] in favor of living a more secular lifestyle, like the nobles at the capital city. His troublesome nature however, is exchanged for a fanaticism when he learns to take responsibility for his actions and becomes immersed in his heritage as a descendant of a priestly family in the northern Fire Nation. After which, he becomes deluded into thinking that the royal family are not the rightful rulers of the Fire Nation and that it is his destiny to assume that position in their place. He’s basically King Agrippa I.
Family: Yuandao is the disgraced heir of a powerful and influential priestly family in the northern Fire Nation. His ancestor opposed Fire Lord Sozin’s father during the unification process several decades back and a result there is much tension between his family and theirs which has been fueled by their bitter history which goes back to the days of legend. I tried to explore the idea that the Fire Lord was originally a sage who over time acquired enormous power. So basically, I have a Zhang vs. Gan Jin thing going on. Anyway, in place of his father, Yuandao’s great uncle has been appointed pater patriae of the household because of his loyalty to the royal family.
History: Yuandao after acquiring an enormous debt joins the Fire Nation military where he meets Prince Azulon. Together the two form a deep friendship. Upon his arrival back to the Fire Nation, Yuandao is one of the first influential figures to recognize the newly crowned Fire lord and helps him secure his place as the new monarch. In exchange for his service, Azulon relieves Yuandao of his debts and appoints him ruler of his home province. Things take a turn for the worst when; Yuandao becomes acquainted with ancestral customs. In order to please his subjects, who are resentful of the royal family, he embraces them and tries his best to be the first king. He eventually slips into fanaticism when he becomes convinced that it is his destiny to end the Fire lord’s tyrannical reign and incites a revolt.
Connection to canon: Friend of Fire Lord Azulon and his mother, who adores him despite the fact that he, is initially a bit of a con artist.

Name: Meiji
Nation: Fire Nation
Bender: Yes, firebender.
Eyes: Orange
Hair: Shoulder length grey hair, though he is balding on top.
Clothing: Long and sumptuous robes that reflect his high status.
Height/Weight: Tall, dark, and lanky.
Weapon: Not important.
Skill level: Was an incredibly powerful firebender in his youth.
Flaws: Meiji is a rather dark and bitter man. Though he is a powerful Daimyo with much prestige and influence, he is enormously insecure inside and prone to fits of rage and depression, in addition to this; he is emotionally manipulative of his family, especially Yuandao, his great nephew.  He has a tendency to cast himself as the victim and never finds fault with himself. Though he is a skilled manipulator and politician, he is constantly seen being manipulated by his older sister, whom he resents.
Family: See Yuandao for information.
History: Many years ago, his family opposed the forced unification undertaken by Sozin’s father. A war erupted between the two and after suffering crushing defeat, the Fire lord appointed Meiji as the household’s Pater Patriae because of his loyalty to the royal family. Though in reality, it was because of blackmail, Meiji is addition to being a cruel military commander who drew many complaints from his abused soldiers was also a sexual deviant and his appointment was mostly due to the royal family’s need to have a yes man in place who was also a member of the household they defeated. He’s basically Tiberius Caesar mixed with Mother Gothel.
Connections to Canon: None really, aside from being head of a household that is subservient to the royal family.

Name: Yuushin [pronounced You-shin)
Nation: Fire Nation
Bender: Yes
Eyes: Gold
Hair: Black
Clothing: Fire Nation royal uniform, like the one Zuko had in season three.
Height/Weight: Average.
Weapon: Not important.
Skill level: Not important.
Flaws: Prince Yuushin is rather naïve and optimistic. Unlike his older brother Azulon, he does not easily perceive the dangers of politics and is easily manipulated. Though despite that, he is a good natured fellow who wishes to aid in his brother’s quest to conquer the world. He is noble and honest.
Family: Is part of the royal family.
History: Yuushin is Sozin’s second son and Azulon’s half brother. He is two years younger than his more famous sibling. His role and importance has not yet been decided.
Connection to Canon: Azulon’s younger half brother.

I decided that I am going to rework Yuushin's character. He at this point is rather bland.

Name: Makani (Hawaiian for "Wind")
Nation: Air Nomads
Bender: Yes, air
Eyes: Stone grey
Hair: Dark wood brown
Clothing: Traditional young Air Nomad robes.
Height/Weight: About average.
Weapon: No…except for being a falconer.
Skill Level: A novice bender
Flaws: Fears fire and distrusts Fire Nation, wary of strangers
Family: Killed in the Hundred Year War.

History: Born into the Eastern Air Temple and began her air bending training at the age of 6, she was 11 when Avatar Aang visited the Air temple, she wanted to befriend Aang, but he left the temple before she could. As storm clouds gathered, the Fire Nation ambushed the temple from the passing of Sozin's Comet. As the attack progressed, her Master Air nun told her to run and as she did, she ran into the forest below as a large wave of flames followed her, engorging into a forest fire. Further in the untouched forest, there was a spiritual sanctuary. Perched overhead was a large Great Horned Owl spirit, as the suspicious spirit questioned why she had come, she pleaded for the spirit to help her escape. Initially the spirit refused, until a burning tree limb snapped and fell towards the spirit, Makani forced an air blast to redirect the burning limb into the fiery brush. The spirit was thankful and agreed to assist the young nomad and with a flash, Makani was in the same sanctuary though untouched by the fire…therefore she was physically transported into the Spirit World. She then realized that the Fire Nation killed all her people and would remain in this Spirit World, not wanting the Fire Nation to find her…and feared that the Avatar was lost with the cycle forever broken. A hundred years passed, and upon the news that the Avatar had returned by rumors spread throughout their world, she then decided to only come out from the Spirit World in secret to watch over the local villagers. One day, she saw a red whiskered hawk had broken its wing after a fierce fight with a Raven Eagle. Nursing it back to health, she released it back to the forest, but it returned wanting to claim Makani as its master. So she trained the bird as her people did with lemurs and named it Bo Feng, he would occasionally gather food for each of them when outside their Spirit realm. As Makani stayed hidden in the Spirit World, Bo Feng once flew into the physical world on the last Solstice then was trapped by barely escaped capture by bandits which caused him to be stuck in that world. Without her companion, Makani had no choice but to wait until the next Solstice. Though she wished she could have at least one friend from her nation to be with.

Connections to Canon: Kinda, eventually becomes a friend and ally to Team Avatar but does not join the group. She has an unrequited crush on Aang, she is unaware of his relationship with Katara.

The Procrastinating Avatar

Name: Gohn.
Nation: Earth, Batkari Pujar. v

A 'fictional' Avatar Town located in the 'desert' originating from the names Bhakkar (Pakistain) & Punjab (Pakistain). A semi-poorly village where people usually tend to themselves, being radied by bandits ocassionally, but not too often to people help out on 'bad' sistuations. Unless, if one gets into a sistuation where the whole village needs help on, there is a 'village cheif' temporarily elected.

Bender: Yes, Earthbender.  Sandbender.
Eyes: Black-borwn with a tint of grey.
Hair: Black with streaks of grey.
Weapon: Misc. Etc.
Skill Level: Novice to Moderate.
Family: Kah (sister)(nonbender), Li (earthbender)(alive), Pai (assumed deceased)(waterbender). Sho (grandmother)(deceased)(earthbender).

History:

Gohn was born to Li and Pai; at the time Pai was unsure of what he had in mind, being contacted various times in life by various kinds of people like Varrick even (being apart of the same lineage and whatnot, the two had worked together but never got anything off the ground.). The waterbender was somewhat-known for his skill in healing, and when he learnt that Li's mother was sick, he approach the villagers in the desert with his bending abilities and at least made the illness more bearable. It didnt last long though and she quickly passed away, leaving Li crushed emotionally. So, Pai stuck around to comfort her and he noticed that the structure in the village was chaotic and needed work. He came to conclusion that the desert village of Pujar really needed a govnered order, so he was it's cheif. He married Li as she was a skilled Earthbender and they eventually had Gohn. When Pai decided to leave after Li was having an affair with a nonbender, but she stated it was a mistake, he left. Then, Gohn's sister, Kah - was born. Gohn decided to move to Republic City in hopes of finding Varrick in case he knew of anyplace his father could be. So far, he has no traces.

Not sure if this is still going on, but here are mine.

Name: Saburo (Japanese for "third son")
Nation: United Republic
Bender: Non-bender/Airbender (Post-Harmonic Convergence)
Eyes: Gray
Hair: Black
Clothing: Equalist chi-blocker suit or Airbender clothing
Height/Weigh: 5'4'', slim, agile
Weapon: Chi-blocking, hand crossbow
Skill Level: High
Flaws: Anger, tendency towards violence, anti-bender bigotry, abandonment issues
Family: Younger brother to Mako and Bolin.

History:

Saburo, along with his brothers, were orphaned 10 years before the start of Book 1 of LoK (Mako age 8, Bolin age 6, Saburo age 5). As Saburo was the youngest and not a bender, Mako chose to leave him in a workhouse for orphans (Think "Oliver Twist") even though they would be forbidden to contact or visit him. Bolin reluctantly agreed.

For the next 7 years, Saburo was rented out as a laborer by the owners of the workhouse. The orphans were treated based on how much money they brought in, meaning that benders were treated better than non-benders. This, along with being abandoned by his brothers, fueled Saburo's hatred for benders. At the age of 12, he ran away and was found by the Lieutenant who recruited him into the Equalist movement, trained him in chi-blocking, and served as a father figure. He also worked in the bookstore that served as a front to an Equalist training camp.

After the Equalists were defeated, he and Kaze (described below) fled Republic City and settled in Yu Dao where they managed to make a happy life for themselves. That changes after Harmonic Convergence when Saburo gains airbending. Kaze breaks up with him. With nowhere else to go, he returns to Republic City and Air Temple Island. He joins Team Avatar on the search for new airbenders and, along with Mako and Bolin, meets his father's family in Ba Sing Se. This starts the brothers on the path to reconciliation. He then leaves with Tenzin for the Northern Air Temple and later leaves with the other airbenders to help stabilize the Earth Kingdom. By Book 4, he has largely made peace with the fact that he is an airbender but remains mostly unrepentant about his role in the Revolution.

Connections to Canon: Younger brother to Mako and Bolin, soldier of the Equalist movement, one of the new Airbenders.

Name: Kaze (Japanese for "wind")
Nation: Air/United Republic
Bender: No
Eyes: Yellow
Hair: Brown
Clothing: Airbender clothing/Equalist uniform
Height/Weigh: 5'3'', slim
Weapon: Kyoshi Warrior-style metal fans
Skill Level: High (fans)
Flaws: Resentment towards father, siblings, and by extension, all benders.
Family: Daughter of Tenzin and Pema. Elder sister to Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan.
History:

Kaze is 14 by the beginning of LoK.

Kaze is the non-bender daughter of Tenzin and Pema. Though Tenzin loved her as much as his other children, he spent more time training the airbenders and Kaze (who he named "wind") felt she'd disappointed him by not being an airbender.

Two years before Korra's arrival in Republic City, Kaze wandered into a random bookstore where she met Saburo, one of the employees. There they bonded over the strange and subversive literature the store sold and for the first time, Kaze no longer felt ashamed of being a non-bender. She confided in Saburo about her insecurities. The two eventually fell in love and Kaze would frequently sneak out of her home to see him. Kaze was soon recruited by the Equalists to be their spy on Air Temple Island.

Knowing that few people had experience fighting airbenders, Kaze secretly developed fighting techniques to negate their abilities. Inspired by the Kyoshi Warriors, she uses metal fans to deflect and redirect air blasts. She has a custom-made pair of platinum fans crafted by Hiroshi Sato. She is instrumental in helping the Equalists capture her father and siblings during the Revolution.

After the Revolution, she and Saburo move to the town of Yu Dao. She breaks up with Saburo after he becomes an airbender. Enraged that airbending has once again ruined her life, she rejoins the remaining Equalist movement and comes up with a plan to brainwash waterbenders into learning bloodbending and becoming an anti-bending army.

Connections to Canon: Daughter of Tenzin and Pema. Soldier of the Equalist movement.

^ So Kaze's a antagonist then? And I don't mean to cause some offense to you, but she seems very shallow for breaking up with Saburo over him becoming a airbender - something which he couldn't control. I also that this plan of brainwashing waterbenders into becoming bloodbenders and making a anti-bender army out of them is very opposite to what the Equalist ideal was. They had recently ousted Amon - who was a bloodbender - so I don't really see any of them getting onboard with this plan of hers.

And a minor point - Yu Dao grew into Republic City. So Yu Dao might be a suburb in the city now.

Was that ever confirmed? From all the art depictions of Yu Dao, it's not anywhere near a large body of water like Republic City is. I know there was a lot of speculation when The Promise was first coming out that the two might be the same, but I've never seen anything official on that note.

^ Hmm, now that I think about it, I'm not sure either. I think at one stage it's page on the wiki said that Aang and Zuko picked Yu Dao as the foundation of Republic City. But now it's been updated to say that Yu Dao became part of the United Republic after it was formed.

Because no one likes OP enemies.

Name: Karrasa
Nation: Formerly Air Nomads, now affiliated with the Light Spirits.
Bender: Avatar
Eyes: Black with white pupils.
Hair: Brown.
Clothing: Wear very bulky airbending robes, a orange pope-like hat 'cause she feels like it. Wears armor underneath.
Height/Weigh: Taller than P'li with her shoes, still taller than most of the cast without them.
Weapon: A simple staff.
Skill Level: Fully realized avatar who began to work when she was five, complete mastery of the AS and all four elements, she lacks sub-bendings but she's still on adult Aang or Kiyoshi's level. Trained herself with the best masters until she surpassed them.
Flaws: Arrogant, rely only on her bending, not a strategist at all, lose her cool when she met someone who can overpower her in a fight, can be easily tricked.
Family: Had a mother and a father who died when a light spirit snapped their necks. Also has a (unwilling) husband.
History: Born in one of the air temples, she was immediately taken away by light spirits, who still allowed for her parents to see her until they grew bored of transporting them and just killed them. She began training very early and ordered for the best benders to train her, grew up all alone with only jerks to help her. She was unleashed on the world after obtaining the avatar state and began to attack whoever opposed the spirits, she was contacted by the previous avatars but she gave them the middle finger. Currently found a husband, when the same light spirit who killed her parents brought him to her.
Connections to Canon: One of the Avatars who came waaayyy before Aang, went down in history as a psycho and seen as a disgrace by every other avatar.

Mind you, she sound very powerful but I know how to defeat her.

Background: Lan was born in a time where Bending is forbidden except for Imperial troops. Bending children are seized as infants and raised as soldiers to secure Shadowbender Emperor Donghai's rule. Parents refusing to surrender their babies are killed along with their babies. Thus, her parents hid her for the first five years of her life. Her mother gave birth to her at their house instead of the closely monitored hospitals. When Lan was five, the White Lotus, who have been searching for the Avatar for years find her and take her away to safety.

Akira Tomodo

Unknown to them, President Donghai of the Republic was collaborating with Shang to take over the world and was a shadowbender himself. Donghai ordered a purge of nearly every bender above childhood age and when Korra discovered this, she fought him. General Tomodo fought Shang who killed him. Oh, the Samurai class is something Zuko created with the sole purpose of protecting the Firelord and the rights of the people. Serious to a fault, introverted, believes the best way to dispatch an enemy is to make sure they can't get up again. Nevertheless, he does have a fun side and only shows it to the few friends he does allow past his gruff exterior.

Junseong secretly uses the capital he gains from oil sales to fund the Restoration. Fancies himself a womanizer but has a heart of gold and is extremely dedicated to his friends and his kingdom.

Name: Major Kimiko Tanaka

Okay, uh. Guess I'll show my main character from my LOK canon/au series Changing Elements. He's the series protagonist alongside Korra.

Name: Tai

Age: 17 (Book 1) 18 (Book 2, 3 and 4.) 21 (Book 5)

Sex: Dude's a bro, mate

Hair: Dark Brown. Doesn't style it

Eyes: light grey

Height/Weight: Bit taller than Korra. Wiry build

Bending: Air/Fire

Weapon: Uses a sword to augment his bending

Nation: United Republic

Skill Level: Grows as the series progresses. Is initially pretty sucky at airbending and firebending but learns to combine them during each book.

Background: Comes from a destroyed village north of Republic City, near the Northern Air Temple. Father was Iroh II's older brother and was a firebender, mother was a Air Disciple who was found as a airbender by Tenzin and Aang. His dual-bending comes from the fact that he was born in close proximity to a dormant Lion Turtle.

Lol

Names: Park and Kim

Age: 40's?

Sex: HAHAHAHA! They wish.

Appearance: Park is mutton dressed as lamb. Kim is whatever his mum packed in his dresser.

Bending: Awesome scientists do not need bending!

Nation: Ba Sing Se upper ring.

Weapons: Able to drink copious amounts of alcohol. Science. Butt-kissing. More science.

Skill level: They lead the BSS science department.

Background: Two knobheads that met at uni and thought it was awesome that they could blow stuff up without bending. Then Kim got serious and did his dissertation on why the world is one huge bender of cosmic elements and Park got into magic. It kinda worked out like how you'd expect. They are currently working for the King of BSS, dubious pleasure that that is.

Hair: None
Eyes: Multicolored
Height/Weight: Can change his size, but he often adopt the size of a large car, and weight as much. Takes the form of some odd, colorful butterfly, because he's a fab dark spirit and you're not his father.
Bending: None, he's a dark spirit who can somehow turn humans beings into spirits while keeping their bendings if they had one when they were humans, alongside the whole shape manipulation.
Nation: Enfer (dark spirit world).
Weapon: His stinger.
Nation: Enfer
Skill Level: Goofy but extremely durable, fast, powerful and with a huge stamina, he can give a very good match to a fully realized avatar and overwhelm master benders. Powerless at distance tho and insanity means that he can easily smash into walls or something.
Background: A dark spirit who was one of Vaatu's best soldiers. After the latter's fall at the hands of Wan, he retreated back into the land of the dark spirits and began to build a castle around some lone portal he found. After some A-hole dark spirit managed to enter the castle, he promptly sent it off in a mission to search for a bender.

Yeah, I don't think that Vaatu had "generals" or that some dark spirit world exist but hey, AU are magical places.

Name: Shingyung

Age: Early to mid twenties.

Nation: Raised in the Fire Nation colonies, but is half Water Tribe by descent.

Bender: Waterbender

Eyes: ...I finished the story and never specified this. Blue, I guess?

Hair: Very dark, kept washed and oiled so that it shines, and worn in a long ponytail.

Clothing: Purple silk dresses, slit for combat.

Height/Weight: Tall, to an intimidating degree.

Weapons: Thanks to her Waterbending training, she knows how to fight with swords in the T'ai Qi Ch'uan style. However, her skill level is below average compared to other swordsmen and she would probably lose in a fair duel. (However, Shingyung does not do "fair.")

Skill Level: Master-class Waterbender when it comes to combat, and also skilled at healing. Has extensive knowledge of Qi and how it affects the body.

Flaws: Insanity. Shingyung was raised to be a living weapon/resources for her masters, and as a child was heavily abused in invasive ways. Shingyung grew up cracked, with no concern for other people. The only exception is Princess Azula, who Shingyung has a sexual/homicidal fixation on that even Shingyung realizes is destructively obsessive (and she's okay with that. Her fondest wish to die by Azula's hand in Azula's arms).

Family: Mother was a prostitute of Fire Nation descent living in the colonies. Father was an unnamed Water Sailor who 'contracted' her mother. Her mother eventually sold Shingyung to the local governor, and afterward Shingyung had no further contact or knowledge of her family.

History: Shingyung was your standard daughter-of-a-dockside-wh*** up until it was discovered that she could Waterbend. Her mother saw an opportunity and sold Shingyung to the local Fire Nation government as a slave. Shingyung was developed as a 'resource' by the province's Governor, who bought genuine Water Tribe instructional scrolls from pirates at premium prices and engaged academics who could use them to teach. At first, Shingyung did not take well to being a resource and brought the wrath of her masters down on herself, but even after she began cooperating, her genuine failures were treated acts of rebellions. Also, her masters were (to put it simply) not nice people, and enjoyed the chance to bully her and treat her as less than human even as they made her their weapon. Her punishments were traumatizing and sadistic, and often she was punished for no reason while being told that she deserved what was happening to her, and taunted that she must secretly like her 'punishments.'

Shingyung developed two basic coping mechanisms. The first was a detached psychology completely lacking in basic human empathy that she hid behind a seductive, creepy facade; she interacts with the rest of the world by speaking in a breathy sing-song voice and always swaying her hips, flirting provocatively even at completely inappropriate times. (To anyone not taken by this act, it comes across as really freaky, like she's an actress in a bad play trying to sell her performance through sheer physical appeal.) Her second way of coping was (in later years) an obsession with Princess Azula Caldera, who Shingyung recognized as a fellow human weapon and general kindred spirit.

Shingyung translated her Waterbending philosophy and knowledge of Qi into a kind of New Age Hippy outlook based on vague notions of balance, mind over matter, mood being linked to health, and the need for pleasure- giving the impression that she has no idea what she's talking about. In truth, though, Shingyung is rather clever and analytical, with a practical streak, and prefers that people underestimate her.

After the war, Shingyung's service to the Fire Nation became service to the corrupt colonial governor who originally bought her, which left her dissatisfied. Cue Retroactive's Big Bad coming a'calling, trying to enlist the governor in a big take-over-the-world conspiracy. Shingyung heard the pitch, and was so taken with the idea that when her master politely declined, she murdered him in his sleep (it was not a quick death) and offered her services in his place. Part of the appeal for her of the Big Bad's plan was that it was heavily focused on the fallen Princess Azula. However, this was not good for Shingyung's mental health, and she became even more obsessed with Azula. Shingyung's ultimate goal is to kill Azula, kiss Azula, die by Azula's hand, and be recognized as Azula's superior (not necessarily in that order) with the vague hope of thus achieving some kind of catharsis for her own awful childhood.

Connections to Canon: Eventually comes to work for the story's main villain as an enforcer/administrator, and serves as a Mini-Boss/Shadow-Archetype for Azula. Also, if you paid attention to her bio above, you can deduce that she was the intended recipient of the Waterbending Scroll that Katara stole.

Ok, honest question, folks: do I make my mad animalist a waterbender or not? Too OP? She's already a genius, beautiful and likely to turn you into a placenta if you cross her.

But, on the other hand, it might make sense for her to have the ability to aid in her research.

Yeah, why not ? It's a gud bending Cheesy

Also, should a plot-key airbender in mah fanfic learns voidbending ? Mind you, she'll be in a place where no airbenders will discover it, she unlocks it by accident and don't know how to use it.

If it makes sense for the story, go for it. I've always thought that OP abilities are merely symptomatic of Mary Sues rather than a real cause, and eliminating them doesn't defang a Sue.

Plus, no one in the story actually seems to like the character, so that's already a major sign she's not a Sue.

Name:Hikaru

Nation:Fire Nation

Bender:Fire

Eyes:Brown

Hair:Light brown, tied back in a braid that reaches just past his shoulders.

Clothing:Hikaru has two outfits, an acrobat costume and an old Fire Nation school uniform, similar to Aang's disguise, he picked up in a thrift store. He also has a pair of brown leather boxing gloves, but he only wears them when he's in a match.

Height/Weight:Shorter than Jinora, taller than Ikki.(Book 4 ages) Weight is about average.

Weapon:Not unless boxing gloves count.

Skill level:Aside from a few circus tricks, Hikaru has only mastered the most basic Fire Bending techniques. Intermediate level acrobatics. Boxing skill is almost at a professional level.

Flaws:Relatively weak Fire Bending. Like most young men, sometimes has trouble saying what he really means.

Family: Parents unnamed, older sister named Ty Xian

History

– Hikaru developed a healthy interest in boxing ever since his father took him to see a match during a family trip to the Fire Nation capitol.

– Per family tradition, Hikaru joined the Shumuzu Circus shortly after Harmonic Convergence. Under his older sister Ty Xian, Hikaru learned a few acrobatic displays for entertaining preshow crowds. His main job, however, was assisting the Fire Bending show.

– Hikaru is quite proud of his lineage. He just feels "Ty Hikaru" doesn’t roll off the tongue that well.

– Unable to join a proper gym since he was constantly traveling, Hikaru taught himself boxing using mail order manuals. The circus strongman gave him some pointers to refine his technique.

– Shortly after Book 4, Shumuzu Jr. allowed Hikaru, under Ty Xian’s supervision, to set up his own carnival exhibit. After putting an ante, no less than ten Yuans, other kids can face Hikaru is five minute boxing round. If they can knock Hikaru down or stay on their feet until the timer runs out, they get double their ante back. If Hikaru knocks them down within the time limit, he takes half their ante. By the time he meets Team Avatar, Hikaru’s records stands at 16 wins and 3 losses.

– Having been from one end of the Fire Nation to the other several times, Hikaru has developed a knack for navigating the country.

– Hikaru’s dream is to move to Republic City and eventually become a legitimate boxer.

Connection to Canon:Hikaru is Ty Lee's grandson.

Sounds like a healthy character to me. I don't think he's a Gary Stu

Here are two of mine for the story I'm currently writing:

Name: Malu

Nation: Air Nomad

Bender: Yes, Airbender

Eyes: Light brown/Amber

Hair: Short, Black, usually tied and clipped to the back of her head in a spiky bun but the front of it almost always falls around her face

Clothing: Typical clothing work by young Airbenders with a few variations. Her brown pants are tighter as they are leggings and over them she has a knee length dress instead of a shirt and wind pants and there is a hood on her reddish orange shawl

Height/Weight: average height for a girl of her age (11) with a somewhat unusually slender build but not glaring.

Weapon: (Yes/No, what weapon) Glider staff, pair of fans from Kyoshi which she uses to amplify her air bending.

Skill Level: (For either bending or weapon) advanced but not a master, she’s at level 29/36 in her air bending training, though she integrates both her staff and her fans into her fighting style seamlessly and is fast and skilled at switching between them when need be, even in the midst of battle

Flaws: Hot-Headed, Emotional, and fiercely competitive, the last of which is both a blessing and a curse

Family: The daughter of two Airbenders, the granddaughter of an Airbender who fell in love with a Kyoshi warrior.

History: She was raised by a nun named Sister Yu at the Western Air Temple and though she was given her grandmother’s fans according to her parents’ wishes, it was Sister Yu who was really a mother to her. Shortly before her death at the beginning of the hundred year war, Malu uncovered documents in the temple record room where Sister Yu had hidden her in an attempt to save her young charge’s life. They revealed that a dear friend of hers was in fact her older brother, though she never got to tell him what she’d found before she died. She haunted a valley in the northern Fire Nation which had once had a high population of Air Nomads living in and passing through it, as a harmless and benevolent apparition until she fell victim to an ancient and mischievous spirit who both fed on and fanned the flames of her sadness, regret, and anger, causing her to attack the Fire Nation civilians living in the area.

Connections to Canon: Sister and friend of Avatar Aang

Name: Aurora

Nation: United Republic

Bender: Water

Eyes: Blue

Hair: Brown, similar to Katara’s style in late season three

Height/Weight: Aurora is slender and a little short for her age, giving her a unintimidating, almost meek appearance, but what little bulk she has is solid muscle, even from a young age her active spirit and dedication to her training toned and built her into a small but strong young woman

Clothing: When she’s not in school: Navy blue leggings with a white blouse that goes halfway up her neck all the way down to the middle of her thigh underneath lighter blue, knee-length robes with long, wide sleeves and a purple sash around her waist. She also wears the necklace that belonged to Katara’s mother, her grandmother, around her neck.

Her school uniform consists of a white shirt (sleeve length varies based on the weather) under a blue jumper with a pleated skirt that comes just past her knees with white leggings under that.

Weapon: Water pouch

Skill Level: Advanced, she practices mainly Southern-style but with a twist in that she’s extremely quick and agile and moves more like an Airbender than anything, this also applies to sports and hand to hand combat. She’s skilled at volleyball and Kamari

Flaws: She can be stubborn and doesn’t always listen to both sides of the story or consider the other person’s point of view before closing her mind and solidifying her opinions on things. This can lead to her being just a little closed minded. She has a deep and firm sense of right and wrong but she’s just a little too quick to forgive her own mistakes and pin others to the wall for theirs.

Family: Aurora is the oldest of 7 children, she lives with her parents, Aang and Katara, and her little brothers and sisters. For most of her early life, her Uncle Sokka, Aunt Suki, and her cousins Leona, Senna, and Yuki live nearby. She returns with her family once a year to the South Pole to visit her grandfather Chief Hakoada. She has a close and deep bond with both of her parents and all of her younger siblings, although they sometimes get on her nerves.

History: Born on Air Temple Island over a year after Katara and Aang were married, Aurora proved herself from a young age to be an exceptionally talented water bender like her mother before her, but was also fascinated by airbending as well. Seeing his daughter’s curiosity, Aang let her train on the spinning gates. This gave her speed, agility, and reflexes not common among non-Airbenders. Later on he also helped her integrate the motions, mindsets, and philosophies of earth and firebending into her style as well. Her large family combined with her father’s responsibilities as the Avatar meant that she grew up fast, becoming responsible and highly resourceful.

Connections to Canon: Aang and Katara’s first born.
