Disclaimer!: I have talked to a mod on this and I have been given permission to make this thread. But first I must state that this is not a thread on Gay Marriage, or your personal beliefs on LGBTQ people. We already have threads in the D&D area that cover those topics.

EDIT: Let me emphasize this.  We will watch closely and take transgressions from both sides seriously.  ~UJoF

Anyways, the thread title sort of explains it all.
How likely/unlikely is it that we'll get an LGBTQ character in Legend of Korra?

If there was an LGBTQ character, would they just end up being a stereotype?

What kind of character would you prefer? Would they be in a relationship, or would their Sexual/Gender Identity just be subtly acknowledged?

And etc....                                                 Discuss.

I don't think Nickelodeon with allow it. Considering any attempts to do stuff like this before have been silenced.

Unfortunately the possibility is very low. However, it'd be nice to see the media begin to accept LGBTQ people more. There are already a few shows on other networks with homosexual characters, but they're very stereotypical. To see a LGBTQ character on a child's network like Nickelodeon would be amazing and great for the world, and Avatar seems to be the best chance for this to happen.

Again, though, the possibility is probably low.

I personally would love to see the Avatar staff introduce a LGBTQ character to the series, because I think they'd do them justice, but I highly doubt Nick would allow it.  Its not that its too heavy of a subject per se (compared to genocide and the like we've seen before) but it's much to much of a political subject.

Not saying I'm against it, but it's really not going to happen. Parents would have a fit.

Violence = OK

Sexuality(outside of a innocent kiss) = NO!!!

I, unfortunately, have to agree with most of you that it is unlikely Nick would allow an LGBTQ character on any of their shows. It would be a controversial decision.

But I think that if any show on Nick would go so far as to do it, it would be Avatar.
If they did have one, I'd like it if it was a Major character(someone in Korra's "Gaang").
A relationship would be nice to see, but to be honest, my standards are low enough where I'd just be satisfied with an out character that is single.

While I wouldn't really have a problem with a homosexual character, I don't think Nick would go for it. They're trying to make money, not statements on civil rights.

Also, Conservative organizations would throw bigger fits. Even going against the Asian religious influence.

I'm sure M&B could pull it off secretively Grin

I would like to see a LGBTQ character in there, it would be pretty refreshing and new. I don't want them to do it if, however, that's what makes the show famous for.

See, I think we could joke or suggest about Spongebob, Haru, Azula, and Ty lee all we want, but until a character themselves acknowledges it or knows it, or at least one of the other characters do so... I don't think it really counts.

I would like to see it, but I don't think Nick will allow it, it may make it by the censors though but it would be very subtitle and not like a direct love triangle or anything.

Broaden your minds, people! Just because the Nickelodeon execs won't allow a character to be openly gay doesn't mean that Bryke won't find a way to hint at a same-sex relationship. I love my subtextual slash ships just as much as the explicit ones.

And I have my fingers (and toes, and all other capable body parts) crossed that Korra will be the one who's hinted to be gay.

I think an ambiguously gay character could work.

I would almost swear that James in Big Time Rush is gay. He likes fashion, teen magazines, his lucky comb, his hair, ect. Tongue
But of course "he likes girls". Yeah, right.

It really depends on how it is presented.  Remember how the American translators took two lesbian Sailor Scouts and made them REALLY affectionate cousins.  The characters still aired, and anyone over 16 weren't fooled.  Obviously, sex won't be part of the show.  As a parent, I'd be upset- and I'm about as liberal...and as rainbow...as they come.  That said, affection can touch but not cross the line.  It can be implied, just not clearly stated.  Yes, I am doubtful too, but you really do never know.  If anyone could and would pull it off, it would be Mike and Brian.  Having spent a few hours with them, I can say they'd do it if they could figure a way to make it work and not otherwise detract from their creation or hurt Nick.

Frankly I was kind of surprised that I did not hear any snarls about Avatar in general from any conservative watch-dog groups. At least from where I was looking.

Yea but they did sometimes. A perfect example being The Waterbending Master and its issues of gender discrimination.

Umm, does anybody even know what Mike and Bryan think about gays? I mean, maybe they're homophobic? Who knows?

OMG, I love that scene so much, it's so funny!
*smug smirk* You like krabby patties, don't you, Squidward?

Anyhoo, it would be very refreshing to see a gay character in TLOK. I'm sure Mike and Bryan would be able to pull off a great characterization so that he/she doesn't end up being portrayed as a walking stereotype.

But I'm not sure how likely it is that they'd be able to do it, since some parents organizations would probably throw a fit...

Maybe if it's handled very subtly?

I was thinking about that actually.

Now, they seem pretty open minded, so you'd think they'd be okay with it.

But, then again, people can be truly unpredictable sometimes, so who knows?

The most subtle I have seen in done was Xena and Gabrielle.....yea.

Hm, well they don't like being shipped together, that's for sure. Tongue

That might be different though.
