I just got the book - it took me awhile, I admit, and read through the whole thing in about an hour and a half.  It is ridiculously beautiful and a great read, but I noted two things:

a) Bryan Konietzko seems to have had most of the ideas, and is credited with many more drawings than Michael De Martino in the book.  So that makes me wonder - what is Michael's role in the series?
b) The Fire Nation capital is called Royal Caldera City!  Why is that not ANYWHERE on the internet (that I have found)?

^Very much!  It gives a lot of good info, and has a lot of gorgeous pictures!  I was VERY lucky, and got it from Barnes & Noble online for less than $20!  But, if you are getting it, get it soon.  I think it is out of print, now.

I second this. There's even some hints of Korra within the book like the Polar Bear Dog and the original series' high tech scifi roots. That's all I'll tell you about it , but its great in general.

It has great background to the characters' evolution, including some fabulous stuff on Zhao and the Blue Spirit.  It really is a "must have" for die hard Avatar fans!

Of course!  Her early design, Azula in Kyoshi Warrior disguise, crazy Azula, etc.

there was some cool concept art of Azula in a phoenix outfit, and appears to be on board an airship, which gives me the impression that she was originally going to accompany her father in burning the earth kingdom to the ground O___O

I know you've already ordered it but it really is a great buy. I was shocked at how large and thick it is and its packed with good stuff. Basically the only merchandise of the show I really care about/would recommend.

The lack of Rhinos, Rough or otherwise, is noted.

More likely Ozai's Pheonix King outfit was based on Azula.  I think they were originally going to base the Fire Nation royal family on the Four Gods and Azula was the Pheonix.

That's just a guess though.

Yes, the Four Gods/entities of heaven, also imperial symbols in China.

Azure Dragon
Red Phoenix
Black Tortoise/Warrior
White Tiger (or Qilin)

In Chinese they’d be called:

Qinglong
Zhu Que
Xuan Wu
Baihu

Your post makes some good sense! Wink

BTW, The capital is called royal caldera city, an information few knows about, or thinks it’s a ‘’provisory’’ name, but that’s it.

Considering I learned those from Digimon Tamers,..... lol , Here's my guess....

Qinglong- Azula
Zhu Que-Ozai
Xuan Wu- Iroh
Baihu-Zuko
HuangLong-Roku/Aang

So I finally went ahead and purchased this online 2 days back. Though it'll take 2 weeks or something to dispatch and another week to get here. :/

Wasn't sure whether to buy it since I'm not really going to read it much after going through it once but then I realized it has beautiful art of not only the great backgrounds but also has a lot of references and insight in character design and the general animation process. This might be helpful in the future, probably not for me but at least for someone that needs it.

After skimming through the thread, I have become interested in seeing Zhao's art page. Apparently he had a rather cool early design.

So the book arrived a few days back and it's much bigger than I expected. Haven't actually got to reading it; I just went through all the art but pretty impressed with the book.

In one of the designs, if he'd wore a turban, he'd look exactly like Jafar. Tongue

I just spent $121.44 for purely Avatar stuff and I completely forgot about the art-books. Well, they're on my list next time I decide to buy something from Amazon.
