Zuko seems so much stronger as "The Blue Spirit" than his regular self.
I guess that's the idea behind masked alter egos.

I think he may be afraid to let himself go all out when people know who he is, because it may give him a bad name or he may do something he regrets.  When he wears his mask, I think he is willing to unleash everything he's got and let loose, because he thinks nobody will be able to pin it on him (Zhao proved that wrong).  His sense of pride holds him back when he's not fighting anonymously, and that may also be what holds him back from lightning.

I'm not so sure about that. If Zuko was going all out, he would probably have done more firebending. Of course, if he did firebend as the Blue Spirit, everyone would know it was him. But your reasoning is still good. Zuko uses the mask to become someone else.

Well, when you look at every instance of other people in the Eest with masked secret identities, it's eprfectly logical, if the opposite of what usually happens. All the previous masked heroes or villains we're used to normally use their powers only while behind the mask but not as themselves. As Prince Zuko, he has superhuman Fire Bending powers. As his masked alter ego, he never uses his powers.

I first thought he was an airbender

I thought he was an earthbender at first. When he grabbed on the bottom of the carriage as it was driving toward the fortress, it seemed like he had just come from underground...

yea, i had to watch that part over a few times, to get me to realize *oh, snap! he buried himself in the dirt!* Zuko was incredibly resourceful in this episode. I think the part I loved about this episode was the music, the bells in the background when the Blue Spirit was shown. I'd have to say that this was a personal favorite of mine, especially because of the question Aang asked at the end: "If  we knew each other back then, do you think we would be friends too?"

And the line at the end with Sokka: "How wazz yur trip, aang? Did you make any new friendsh?" It made me giggle and think of the muddled dialogue of Oddworld.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. I haven't watched the whole series, so I can't clue you in on anything. But I think the animators also re-enforced the foreshadowing by Zuko sleeping in his quarters and rolling over onto his side, so his back is turned to the Fire Nation banner. At some point, I think Zuko, Iroh, Aang, Toph, Katara and Sokka are gonna be caught in the heat of battle, all be challenged by the Fire Nation at the same time, and have to band together to survive. If you think about it, the combination of the whole team completes the template for a bending guerrila force. Everything is represented.

Iroh, the Dragon of the West, has the battle strategy skills
and is a practitioner of cold fire (lightning). His presence
will also help Zuko retain focus and fundamentals of form.

Zuko's headstrong nature makes him a fine
first-assault man, and he is rather capable at firebending.

Aang plays defense and clears out enemies with airbending.
He can clear out clusters of troops, making the fight easier.

Katara is the healer and master waterbender, she can
be a compassionate hand to prevent excess casualties.

Toph is a master earthbender and can be used as the
foundation for the group. Her earthbending skills will allow her
to dig into the ground and hammer away at the enemy with
projectiles of earth and stone. A tiny little ballista.

Sokka has the warrior's instincts and heart, thus being able
to encourage the gang to go on when times are down. He is also
a bit of a weapons specialist, and may go back-to-back with Zuko
and his broadsword skills.

The entire team is there, but not currently assembled. I am waiting
with much anticipation for the final battle with Firelord Ozai.

I found Zuko's guise as the Blue Spirit complete with ninja skills, amazing stealth abilities, master combat, and NO bending and/or supernatural talents at all to be very Batman-ish. And in my book, the Dark Knight pwns all so that makes this episode all the more so very cool. Grin

Here's to hoping their temporary alliance is foreshadowing a more secure trust between Aang and Zuko. When the Fire Prince isn't trying to capture him, those two could certainly make an invincible team.

YUS, ombob, this whole episode was a tear jerker!  It was just SO awesome!!!  Honestly, I wasn't surprised to find out it was Zuko behind the mask, even though I still have no idea what "The Blue Spirit" is, or anything to do with it, besides what you guys say.  The first tear jerker scene was the afore mentioned: Zuko: My Honor... My throne... my country.  I'm about to lose it all.

It was extremely moving to watch and listen to it, seeing another side of Zuko that wasn't angry and wrathful.  And yes, it did actually break my heart!  :'(

The second scene was when Zuko was starting to wake up and Aang was telling him about his friend from the fire nation.  The look on Zuko's face....  :'( *smiffle*  You could really tell he was thinking sersiously about what Aang said about being friends.  I was expecting that fire move from Zuko, I knew he couldn't lie still, even if he WAS thinking about it.

Aang and Zuko make such an incredibly awesome team!!! Cheesy  And yes, I have to completely agree with Rosefire on this!  Grin  If only... if only...

Third tear jerker is when Aang is lying on Appa's tail and Sokka asks him if he made any new responses and Aang says something like "No, I don't think so."  :'(  Again, my heart broke!  I feel sooooooo bad for Aang!  He lost everyone he loved, all his friends and family!! :'( :'(

Another scene that was really good was when Zuko was lying in bed and then turned his back on the fire nation flag, like previously mentioned by other users! n_n;  It shows another different side of Zuko that we very rarely see.  It's refreshing to see that he can... have a heart. *heart melts*

And Sokka!   Cheesy LMAO  The dude is funny!  Everything about this episode was awesome, and Sokka, the ever-faithful comic relief of the show!  Gotta love 'em!!!  10 all the way!

Well like others said before, VERY VERY exciting, it's worth more than a 10! I live in Holland, so the first time I saw this eppie was like in early July...Smiley But really I was like shaking when I saw a scar under the mask and than Aang moved it away and you saw Zuko!!!!:OOOO, Aang just ran away I was like: 'No, no don't go away, after everything he did for you!' and yes like I thought Aang never leaves me unstatisfied!!!:) We saw Zuko having feelings in epi 112, and now BAM 113; Zuko ALL human!! Really it's a great eppi, and I'm for sure Zuko is going to use his Blue Spirit form more than only two times ( Blue Spirit, The Swamp). I'm almost sure he's going to use it in Ba-Sing-Se. Why? I don't know...I just feel it like this...hmmmm instincts! YAHYYY LIKE SOKKA!!;D

This was without a doubt the episode that got me hooked on Avatar. Cool  Everything - from Zuko's despair, to Zhao's evilness (is that even a word?), to Aang's search for medicine for his friends, to Sokka's delusions (second only to the hallucinations of "The Desert" hee hee Wink), to Momo's absolute cuteness just got me addicted to AtLA.

The ending was amazing, filled with forshadowey (I KNOW that's not a word Tongue) goodness.  Aang talking about his old Firenation friend, the look on Zuko's face when Aang left, Zuko turning his back to the flag, and Sokka sucking on the frog (it's funny, in season two he's still putting strange things in his mouth...).  I'd give this episode a 200,000,000,000 if I could!

love this episode! I already seen Siege of the north parts1&2, so I knew Zuko was the blue spirit, but it was still really good. You can see that Zuko has some good in him because,if you ask me, he didn't really try too hard when he shot at Aang.

I love this episode.  I'll quote Azula from Zuko Alone:

Azula: You waste all your time playing with knives. You're not even good.

Yeah right Azula, looks like Zuko got good.  Zuko may be only a slightly above average firebender but he's a sword god.  Remember when he's stealing food in the Serpent's Pass episode.  That was tooo much.  Zuko is so awesome.  And the Blue Spirit is an excellent persona.  It's so un-Zuko.  Blue, like water the opposite of fire and Zuko.  Spirit... when i think of spirit i think of ones inner strengths, powerful and lively, but also at peace; all of which is what Zuko becomes.

^ Remember the fight scene between him and Jet?  I think that was "City of Walls and Secrets".  Or... when he was teaching that little boy in Zuko Alone... I think that was the episode.

He's a GREAT swordsman!

One of my all time favorite episodes. The frogs, herbalist, and halucinating Sokka were all hilarious. Butr waht really got me was the Blue Spirit.
I never suspected that it would be Zuko. During the episode, I was thinking that Zhao would capture them and then when he went to remove the mask, there would be no face. But when Aang removed the mask and it was...Zuko? That just blew me away. I don't remember seeing the ending the first time (I was having a major fangasm) but whwn I rewatched it I started to think that maybe Zuko doesn't want to be he badguy, he just wants to help people, but do to his previous attempts, he is forced to play this role. He dosen't want to be the monster that other firebenders aree, he wants to be human.
This is one of the few episodes I can watch 16 times in a row without it getting repititive. A 10/10 in my book.

Well Zuko wanted to save Aang so he can take Aang to the fire lord becuase thats the only way he can restore his rightful place in his throne....if someone else kidnapped the avatar then he can never restore is throne  because there is no way he can get the avatar when the avatar is already kidnapped...
