I love Mai's development in the second episode.  She's upset at Zuko, and in defense the only argument he leaves is, "That's now how I see it."

Somehow that gets to her, like deep inside, she knows there's no way Zuko would give up all he had in order to join the Avatar, unless he genuinely believed he was previously serving the wrong side.

I just saw both of these episodes last night again, the first time I saw them I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because it does not have the whole gang there and is only Sokka and Zuko for a bit (Until part II with Azula, Sokka's Father, etc.)

But it is a good part of the series and develops the friendship between Sokka and Zuko.

Such an incredible episode! One of my favorites! I loved seeing Suki again for the first time since Appa's Lost Days. I also loved Sokka and Zuko planning the break and getting along. Also, I never though I'd see this show centered on a high security prison, but it worked so well. I was shocked to see Azula's "friends" betray her.

I loved these episodes! This is the one that convinced me to love Maiko. Seriously, standing up to Azula = dedication and love.
I also loved the Zukka bonding and the discussion about girlfriends.
("My last girlfriend turned into the moon."
"That's rough, buddy.")
And, of course, Chit Sang's rioting skills.

^I agree with all of that.  Except "love Maiko" is "love Mai" in my case.

"What are you doing?"
"Saving the jerk who dumped me."

One of the best moments of the series - I practically stood up and applauded at that. Great episodes!

I love Mai in this episode!  It was nice to finally see her boil over and betray Azula - I was applauding with you Beale.  I was sooo proud of her.  I think I shouted something to the equivalent of "SERVED!" at some point. Cheesy  And Maiko = ♥!

I don't know if it has been said before, but this is such a good episode and one example is that you take out the lead character and you don't notice his absence.

Anyone noticed that the whole mission of rescuing Hakoda, kind of proves not that important in the long run. In the next episode he, and Chit Sang are seperated from the group. They go through all that trouble for nothing. I think it is more impact on the plot is Suki being rescued than Hakoda. Hakoda who from this point foward doesn't do anything, and we don't see him again till the epiloque when the war is over.

^Yeah.  It wasn't important to the plot really, but it was important to Sokka's development.

These episodes have showed me, that the series should have more episodes without Aang, Toph and Katara. And more with AZULA-ZUKO-SOKKA Mai and TyLee together.

^ I tend to agree. I especially liked Mai and Ty Lee and felt they could have had a deeper role.

I definitely agree. I feel like their characters weren't used to their full potential. It's one of my main criticisms of ATLA.

^ That is true, i would like to see more fight scenes of Mai and Ty Lee, eventhough we had our fair share in the series.

I'm glad they did "The Beach", as we got to know more about them and also Azula, i wished they did more for them though ...

I agree with you guys. Fleshing out more of Mai and Ty Lee's characters would have been awesome, especially Ty Lee who got barely any screentime in Book 3.

I tell you, Legends Of Korra needs to do some episodes like this. An episode in which Korra is barely in it. It would do wonders for the other characters if Korra just goes away for an episode.

I was very disappointed and surprised that Mai and Ty Lee appeared more in Book 2 than Book 3. But most of all, I still can't believe we didn't see them during the DoBS invasion, even after the Fire Nation figured out there was going to be a homeland attack. Seriously, what better bodyguards could Azula and Ozai get than those two?

Actually, I was glad to see the Suki action in part II where she captures the Warden. She did it so swiftly and skillfully as a non-bender with no weapons.....

I just rewatched this ep and had a serious thought

So they busted Chit Sang out

but we know nothing about this dude

so uh... anyone ever stop to think what he could've done to be put in the highest security Fire Nation prison?

they could've just freed a serial killer or something

He could've been a traitor to Fire Nation? Those kind of people would be sent to BR for the highest level of punishment other than death right?

He didn't seem like a bad guy.

According to his website bio, he claims that he was framed.

Obviously, Sokka or Zuko checked his prison records before impulsively throwing in with him as convenient.

Am I the only one who thought Zuko and Sokka fighting against Azula was like a turn-based RPG?
