So people like to ignore the fact that Ty Lee can disable Bending by hitting key points on a body? If Ty Lee can do that, imagine the Avatar doing it to you... oh wait.

Ty Lee's chi-blocking is a physical thing.  Engerybending is more spiritual, and it's permanent.

Still the same concept, blocking someone's ability to Bend the Elements.

Well, people also can't walk or even move when she does it, so it's still pretty different.

This is true but the concept of hitting key points to knock out the Bending ability is what I am talking about. The Guru also talks about Energy as well to help Aang with his Avatar state. It doesn't seem to far from stopping up someone else's energy. Especially with Iroh constantly talking about how Firebending is energy based.

on my way through the series, and this is another episode that highlights aang's loss.

"Its not about finding a teacher anymore, its about finding a friend"

Bumi is his only real friend left from before the iceberg.

not that the episode didn't have it's downpoints. Tom Tom started to get on my nerves, and the sheer stupidity of Mai's parents. I don't think they set up her character well. sure she comes off as incredibly bored, but her fighting? it just looks weird at first. All in all, another hit in a season of hits.

You must remember Aang knew other people from all of the nation he was good friends with Bumi. He would of saved anyone else who was a friend of his.

I thought Mai and Ty Lee were great additions to the show, so I really liked this episode. (the reason I didn't mention Azula being added to the show in this episode is because she was first seen at the end of "The Siege of The North Part 2")10/10 A+

This is a great episode. Azula cracks me up sometimes, and this episode is one of those times. Cheesy

Not to mention Azula had a big role in The Avatar State...

Oh geez, I'd almost forgotten that bit with the slap.

Decent episode.  Not as strong as I remember it, though.  Maybe it's because I'm tired.

First of all let me say that the fights were fantastic.  First of all, I love it when characters fight on moving objects.  It adds an extra sense of kineticism when even while standing still you're going at 100 mph.  That final battle across the sliding crates was beautiful to behold.

Sokka's the brilliant idea guy again, of course.  Love that.

The portrayal of Mai's parents was pretty interesting.  Instead of the usual tyrants and despots we usually associate with Fire Nation rulers, they have bureaucrats who are just trying to do their job.  Unfortunately their job is to keep the people of Omashu down.  I suspect that that's like a lot of lower to mid level Fire Nation governors- not "evil" themselves, but part of an evil system.

We also have Azula recruiting her team here, particularly mai and Ty Lee.  I've always liked Ty Lee, particularly because of how she just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of her Fire Nation colleagues.  She's so perky, upbeat, and cheerful, you almost forget she's a villain until you see her fight the Gaang.  Their whole friendship fascinates me.  I feel like it's coming out of something that used to be real friendship, but now is just about intimidation, and she's her friend partly because *not* being her friend would be much worse.  Mai can be entertaining with her dry, cynical monotone (Sometimes I used to call her Evil Daria) but overall she doesn't hold my interest as much as the others.

I actually like this episode a lot. How the gaang got everyone out of the city with pentapox was a little silly but there was something about it that worked.

Its funny how you say Mai doesn't hold your interest as much as the others. I showed a friend the series for the first time a few months back and Mai was so boring to her that she didn't even recognize that Mai as Zuko's girlfriend in season three as the same person fighting with Azula and Ty Lee in Season 2.

The discussion went something like this as my friend and I watched The Headband.

Friend: Who is Zuko's girlfriend? Where the hell did she come from?

Me: Tha't Mai...you know, one of the girls chasing Aang and friends all last season.

Friend: Oh...really?

Me: yeah

Friend: Huh...I guess I forgot about her.

Needless to say, I guess Mai isn't much of a memorable character.
