Maybe her hair orb is just a ponytail folded under with the ends tucked into her headband. I think it's possible it could get that big and round if she has really thick hair.

See how her hair orb isn't round when you look at it from the side? If it was being held up by a frame on the inside it should be perfectly spherical from all sides. That's what makes me think it's a looped ponytail.

...ha, that would make two Avatar girls with hair loopies Tongue

The hair orb makes me angry. I wanna attack it and beat it. Too good for gravity (stupid orb). Maybe in the new ep. they will show Katara braiding it.

Her hair isn't solid, it's a bun as some have started. If we look at this picture the girl furthest to the right has the same hair-do as Toph. I assume that Toph uses small combs and pins to keep her hair up.
