You really don't need to read this introduction to understand the story, but I still strongly advise it.

This story takes place after the war – the Fire Nation has won, and Azula has appointed herself Queen of Ba Sing Se, where she keeps an eye on the Earth Kingdom for her father.  This is the tale of a man named Sheng, Azula's most faithful servant.   Though he is little more than a slave, he has fallen in love with his Queen, despite her cruelty and lack of compassion toward him.  His brothers, however, are Earth Kingdom rebels who wish to retake Ba Sing Se from Azula, and Sheng must make a most difficult decision as to where his loyalties lie.

I wrote this story several months ago.  It was originally posted on Koh's Lair, but I started to post a censored version of it on this fanfiction board.  I stopped posting the chapters for some reason, and now I'm starting from scratch with a new thread and a new title:  It was formerly called "The Hatred of Love."

Keep in mind that though the story has been modified to suit the PG-13 limit of this board, it was originally created for Koh's Lair, and the content may be different from what you are used to seeing on this board.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.  Praise and criticism are both welcome.  (This chapter is short, but the others will be longer.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                        CHAPTER 1: The Tyrant's Slave

Eight years after the fall of Ba Sing Se. The Fire Nation has won the war, and Azula remains the ruler of the Earth Kingdom.

Sheng fell to his knees, holding his hands to his mouth in a futile attempt to keep the blood from spilling over onto the floor. Groaning in pain and sucking on his split lip, he looked up at his tormentor.
She was so beautiful, even with blood on her fingertips. She stood over him, smiling as though nothing had just happened, as if she had never struck him. Smiling in that radiant yet cruel way that he both loved and hated so much.
"I am sorry..." he moaned, crouching low over the droplets of blood that splattered on the floor and stained the carpet, praying that she wouldn't notice. Not that it would do any good. She always noticed.
She knelt next to him and wiped her bloody fingertips on his cheek. It almost seemed like a lover's caress – Sheng would have given anything for it to have been just that – but in truth she was mocking him.
"Lady Azula... I am so sorry."
     "Indeed you are."
Sheng lowered his gaze, unable to meet her eyes.
"There is blood on the carpet, Sheng. Did you know? You are bleeding, staining my floor."
Sheng buried his mouth into the sleeve of his robe, hoping to stem the flow. He replied, but his voice was muffled against the fabric. "I will clean it up, Milady. As always."
"As always," Azula echoed softly. "And you will also clean up the tray and the wine that you spilled. Then you will fetch me another glass. Watch your step at the threshold this time, Sheng. If you spill it again you will have much worse than a bloody lip."
     "Yes, Milady."
"You are a very lucky man, Sheng. You may not know it, but you are. With all the slip-ups you make every week, one would think that I would have killed you by now."
Sheng looked up. "Then why haven't you?" he whispered bitterly.
Azula smiled lovingly, but her eyes remained cold and hard, windows to a soul that was incapable of love. "I have never known anyone who was as loyal to me as you are, Sheng. I know that you would go to hell and back for me."
Sheng bowed his head, tears in his eyes. "I do that for you every day, Milady."

                                        *        *        *

Sheng watched Lady Azula as she left the throneroom. Even after she had disappeared from sight, he continued to stare in the direction that she had gone.
What words could best describe Lady Azula? Sheng could not decide whether she was like a dark angel or a radiant devil – perhaps she was both.
How he hated her. Every day he was tempted to slip poison in her wine, but he knew that he could not bear her death. As her personal servant, she trusted him... which should have been her weakness. Instead, it was his. The fact that she trusted him meant more to him than anyone would ever know. Her presence was harmful, yet at the same time it was intoxicating, and he felt both blessed and cursed to be by her side as her attendant.
His emotions were conflicting opposites – he loved the fact that he hated her, and he hated the fact that he loved her. But how could one feel both hatred and love toward someone at the same time? Was it really possible? Or did he truly love her, but only tried to convince himself that he hated her?
Sheng gave a long sigh and withdrew his sleeve from his mouth. It had stopped bleeding. Now he would have to clean the blood from the floor, as always.
     As always.

I'm looking forward to this. Most Fics don't look at what happens if Fire wins in the end.
Looking forward to more, Fate.

Here's Chapter two.  In this chapter the conflict of the story will become apparent -- Sheng is torn between his loyalties.  On one side he has Queen, Azula, whom he both loves and hates with all his heart.  Despite her cruelty, he cannot bear the thought of her death.  On the other side are his brothers, who  tell him that his loyalties must remain with his own people -- the Earth Kingdom.  In the end, only one side will survive, and Sheng has a choice to make...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHAPTER 2:  Conspiracy and Rebellion

Sheng stood at the highest window of the palace, gazing out at the city. The Fire Nation had conquered it eight years ago – Ba Sing Se, the impenetrable city, had been penetrated by Azula, and she had seized control of it in the space of a single day.
Of course, not everyone had been happy with this. There had been a massive uprising five years ago among the Earth Kingdom citizens, but their desperate attempt to retake the city had been crushed. The casualties had been countless – half of the population in the Lower Ring had been wiped out, and nearly all the buildings had been leveled. The Middle and Upper Rings of Ba Sing Se had remained – for the most part – undamaged.
But now another revolt was brewing. The remaining residents of the lower ring (which was now an even more wretched place than it had once been) were gathering up strength. Azula, however, was not the least bit worried. "Even if they do have the audacity to attack," she had once said, "they will be no more successful than last time."
As a lifelong resident of the city, Sheng knew that he should be part of this struggle for freedom – it was only his devotion to Azula that kept him from having anything to do with the resistance. This put him in a tight spot, because his two older brothers were the ones who were stirring up the rebellion. They were the ringleaders.
A voice spoke from behind him, causing Sheng to turn away from the window.
     "Brother."
     Speak of the devil...
It was Sheng's oldest sibling, Xin. Dressed in the robes of a Dai Li agent, he stood with his arms crossed, staring at his younger brother.
"Have you decided on your loyalties, Sheng? In a few days it will not be safe for those who call themselves allies of ‘Queen' Azula."
Sheng shook his head. "I haven't given you away, have I? If I had told Azula that you were masquerading as one of her Dai Li, you wouldn't be talking to me now."
Xin nodded slowly. "Indeed. But even as a Dai Li I cannot get close to Azula. Only her most trusted servants are allowed into her presence, and I do not qualify."
     "No kidding."
     "But you do."
Sheng narrowed his eyes. "What are you saying?"
"I am giving you a chance to prove your loyalties once and for all, brother. If you are loyal to your people, you will eliminate her. I don't care how – poison her, stab her, push her out the window... it doesn't matter. But she must be removed... preferably tonight."
"What if I don't do it?"
Xin glared. "Then when the revolt happens, you will not be spared. The uprising will take place exactly four days from now, brother, whether Azula is dead or not. If you are not with us, then you are against us."
"Suppose I tell Azula what you have just told me?"
"It doesn't matter. I believe that she is anticipating our attack anyway. Before we part ways, brother, I remind you that you are the only one who can dispose of the queen before the rebellion. If you do, then our victory is assured."

                                                                           *          *          *

Sheng knelt beside Azula's throne, staring at the floor. He was deep in thought, pondering his brother's words.
Azula turned to look at him, her eyes sharp and piercing. "Something is troubling you."
Sheng shook his head. "No, Milady. My mind was just...wandering."
"Oh? It's been doing that a lot lately, hasn't it?"
     "I suppose so."
"What for? You used to be more focused. These days you seem nervous and clumsy. Worried. Tired."
     "I am not tired, Milady."
"Liar. Your eyes are bloodshot from lack of sleep. Something is causing you distress."
Sheng gnawed on his lower lip. Should he tell her about his brother? Should he tell her that the leader of the resistance was disguised as a Dai Li agent?
No, whispered a voice in the back of his mind. You cannot betray your own brother. He'll be killed.
     But she could be killed...
So what? You hate her. Kill her, and you'll be free.
     "Sheng," Azula snarled, "What's wrong?"
"Why does it matter to you?" Sheng muttered before he could stop himself.
He regretted it instantly. Azula leaped to her feet and struck him viciously across the face, her fingernails gouging out long streaks of flesh.
"You dare talk back to me?" she hissed. "Give me an answer!"
Sheng wiped blood from his face, still arguing with himself inside his own mind.
     Don't betray your brother!
     I can't kill Azula –
After what she just did to you? She tore your face open!
     It's not that serious...
    You'll suffer worse!
     She is my queen –
What about your brother? Would you really choose this sadistic bitch over your own flesh and blood?
Azula sat on the floor next to Sheng. Softly, tenderly, she ran a hand through his hair and wiped the blood from his face. "Forgive me," she whispered. "I've had a difficult day. I didn't mean to lose my temper. But really, you should not speak to me that way."
Sheng knew that it was all just an act. Azula was never sorry. She just liked to play with his heart, and that was what she was doing now.
But the way that she had run her hand through his hair...
You fool, don't fall for it! You know that she's not serious!
     Not yet, but perhaps someday...
    Don't tell her anything.
     I love her...
     You hate her!
     I cannot betray her.
You must! You must! YOU MUST!
     No...
     "Sheng," Azula whispered, "Stand up."
     "Milady, I..."
     Tell her nothing!
Azula placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Yes?"
"I... I have something to tell you."

CHAPTER 3:  My Enemy... My Brother

Xin was arrested at dawn.
The entrance hall of the palace was closed off to all but Azula and the Dai Li, and it was there that Xin was chained to a large stone pillar to await the Queen's judgment. He struggled against the chains that bound him, yelling and cursing, screaming every obscenity that came to his mind. The Dai Li had tried to beat him into silence, but their efforts only seemed to encourage him.
Sheng could hear him from Azula's throne room, and he stared miserably at the floor, sick with guilt. He had handed his own brother over to the Dai Li, and Xin would almost definitely be put to death.
"You did the right thing, Sheng," whispered Azula. She stood beside him, leaning casually against her throne.  "Xin would have been the death of us all."
"But he was my brother," Sheng replied bitterly. "He trusted me—"
"I trust you," Azula interrupted. "You are loyal to me, and I am very pleased with you."
"Are – are you going to kill him?"
Azula laughed softly. "Of course I'm going to kill him – he is a rebel, and I must make an example of him. Mercy is a sign of weakness, Sheng, and I am not weak. Respect is gained through fear. Remember that."
"Milady," Sheng pleaded, "I beg you – lock him in the prison instead. Do you really need to kill him? He is not a threat to you anymore."
"The best way to make sure that your enemy is defeated is to cut off his head. The prisons have been empty ever since I took power, though the graveyards have become quite crowded."
"Please, Milady... what do you have to gain by executing him?"
Azula raised an eyebrow. "What do I have to lose?"
Sheng collapsed at his Mistress' feet, tears streaming down his face. "Have mercy on him... he's my brother..."
Azula stepped over him disdainfully and headed for the door. "He's my enemy. However, I will let you go and visit him one last time before he dies. Make it quick."

                                                                             *          *          *

That cruel, twisted, inhuman, sadistic bitch! How could she? Xin was no longer a threat!
Sheng knew, deep down in his heart, that he was the one who was ultimately responsible for his brother's execution. Any suffering that Xin went through before finally being put out of his misery would be because of him. Sheng had no one to blame but himself.
As he walked nervously into the entrance hall, Sheng fought back the tears. How could he have betrayed his brother? How?
     What have I done?
Surrounded by ten Dai Li, Xin was snarling like a rabid animal as he tried in vain to break free of his chains. His face was bruised and bleeding – the Dai Li had struck him at least a dozen times – and his hair was matted down with sweat.
"Brother," Sheng whispered. The Dai Li stood aside to let him approach Xin.
At the sight of his brother, Xin spat on the floor in contempt. "Renegade! Filth! Scum!  Your name will be cursed forever."
     "Brother... I am sorry."
     "Go to hell."
     "Xin, I didn't mean to –"
Xin interrupted with a bark of harsh laughter. "You didn't mean to? Did you give me away on accident? You are a disgrace. I should have known that you would side with Azula. The way you look at her... But you'll never have her, Sheng. Be careful lest she pluck your wandering eye."
Sheng shook his head. "Listen to me, Brother—"
"You are no brother of mine."
"Please, just listen... This isn't what it seems ... You don't understand."
     "Oh? Explain."
Sheng opened his mouth to speak, but words failed him. He could not justify himself. He had turned his brother in of his own free will.
This was exactly what it seemed.
Sheng's mouth moved soundlessly as his lips tried to form words that wouldn't come. His thoughts were a chorus of bitter accusations.
     Backstabber!
     Turncoat!
     Traitor!
     Renegade!

Sheng quelled under his brother's cold stare. He couldn't bare it any longer. With a choked sob, he turned and fled the room.
     He did not look back.

His brother is a jerk. I stand by my statement. Brothers aren't suppose to pressure you into things. They're suppose to either support you, or leave you alone. You update quick, Fate. Can't wait for more.

I could see why Sheng did the right and wrong thing. His brother may have treated him badly, but turning him over to his own death? That's what kind of made me think he did the wrong thing. My brother has pressured me before, but I don't kill him.

Great chapter!

Azula is preparing Xin for a public execution.  Sheng has been forced to attend and watch his brother die.  Out on the steps of the Earth Kingdom palace, the rebel leader will be killed before great multitude.  The security is high: The freedom fighters cannot rescue him.  Before the day is over, Azula's cruel grip upon the city will have tightened into a stranglehold...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHAPTER 4: Execution

The western sky blazed with the blood-red light of the setting sun.  A sense of both anticipation and dread hung upon the evening air.
A massive crowd had assembled in front of the palace, at the bottom of the steps that lead up into the main building.  They had all been summoned to witness the execution of Xin, the rebel leader who had infiltrated the Dai Li ranks.  Queen Azula had wanted Xin's execution to be public, and she had gotten her wish – over a thousand people had turned up.
Security was extremely high.  Azula stood at the top of the steps high above the crowd, flanked by eight Dai Li.  Dozens more of her dreaded agents lurked in the crowd below, and scores of Fire Nation soldiers stood guard at every gate.  Any attempt by the rebels to rescue Xin would be crushed as soon as it began.
Xin was escorted out of the palace by four Dai Li.  He was no longer struggling or spitting vile curses; now that his time had come, he was resigned to his fate.  He held his head high, a sneer of open contempt curling his lips as the Queen turned to face him.
"So," Azula said mockingly, "you decided to show up."
"Did I have a choice?" Xin snorted.  His eyes were not on Azula, however.  Instead, he was looking over her shoulder at a young man with a tearstained face who was skulking in the shadow of a pillar.
"Ah... Sheng.  I figured that he'd be here."
Azula inspected her fingernails casually, smirking slightly.  "He didn't want to come but I made him.  He's been crying all day long... I figured that witnessing my victory might cheer him up."
   "Crying?"
"Yes.  You should have heard him a few minutes ago...he was bawling like a child.  ‘Please don't kill him—he's my brother!   I'll do anything!  Let me die in his place!  Oh, I beg you!'  Pathetic.  No wonder you don't seem to like him."
Xin continued to stare at his brother, who was now on his knees, shoulders heaving as he sobbed silently into his hands.  For the first time since his capture, Xin felt a terrible stab of pity for Sheng.
Azula looked back over her shoulder at her servant.  "Sheng!" she called. "Come here!"
Sheng slowly got to his feet, trying unsuccessfully to blink tears from his eyes as he shuffled over to his Mistress' side.  "Yes, Milady?" he said miserably.
Azula's eyes became cold and pitiless.  "Xin is going to commit seppuku, right here in front of the entire crowd."
   Sheng gasped with horror.  "No."
The Queen gestured to one of her guards, who handed her two blades – a short dagger and a long, curved sword.  "I think you both know how this works."
Both Sheng and Xin knew all too well.  Seppuku was an old Fire Nation ritual that had fallen out of practice over two-hundred years ago, though stories of it were still quite common.  It had been performed mainly by the dishonored and the disgraced as a way to regain their honor.  The act of seppuku was self-evisceration with a dagger, and often a friend would stand behind them to put them out of their misery by beheading them with a single blow of a sword... but only after the ritual had been completed.  Once the man was dead, his honor was restored.
Xin's mouth was dry with fear, but he didn't let that fear show.  He glared at Azula with disgust.  "Since when was seppuku a public act?"
Azula shrugged.  "Since today.  Now, go stand over there where everyone can see you."
The Dai Li lead Xin over to the edge of the top step, overlooking the vast multitude below.  At the sight of him, the crowd went wild as if welcoming a king.
Xin felt sick.  Was this how it was to end, being forced to kill himself in front of a thousand people?  Seppuku was supposed to be a ritual of honor... but there was no honor in this.
Azula walked over to his side, still holding the two blades.  She held them up for the entire crowd to see, and the people below cheered and shouted.
Xin shook his head.  What has this world come to? he thought sadly.
The Queen turned and gestured to Sheng, beckoning him to come closer.  Tears were flowing down his cheeks as he approached his Mistress, whispering, "Please don't do this.  He doesn't deserve it... Let me take his punishment for him... Please, Milady..."
As the Dai Li guards formed a half-circle behind them, Azula  faced the two brothers.  She passed the dagger to Xin...
   ...and the sword to Sheng.
Sheng's eyes widened with dread.  "No, Milady... please, don't make me!"
Azula ignored him and glared at Xin.  "Now kneel, you bastard."
Xin glared back defiantly, his face awash in the bloody light of dusk.  "I will not kneel."
With one swift movement, Azula kicked him viciously between the legs, causing him to fall to his knees as he gasped with pain.  "Now, remove your shirt."
   "No."
Azula grabbed him by the hair and yanked hard, tearing out a fistful.  "Remove your shirt!" she screamed.
Knowing that he was beaten, Xin ripped off his shirt and tossed it aside.
"Now," whispered Azula, "You know what to do.  Stand behind him, Sheng."
   "Milady, oh I beg you..."
   "Do it!"
With a sob, Sheng stood behind Xin and raised the sword.  "I...I am  s—so sorry, b—brother."
Xin turned his head to look at his brother one last time.  "I forgive you, Sheng.  I forgive you."
   Then...
   "Now!" hissed Azula.
Xin plunged the dagger into his side.  Crying out with pain, he slowly drew the blade across his stomach.  His blood splashed down the steps, and the crowd's roars were deafening.
"Do it, Sheng!"  he screamed,   "Do it!"
Sheng just stood there with the sword raised, sobbing, "I can't... I can't do it!"
"Now!" screeched Xin.  "Please, end it!  End it!  END IT!"
Sheng trembled.  He was frozen, unable to bring himself to strike.
   "NOW, BROTHER!  NOW!"
Closing his eyes, Sheng swung the blade.  Xin screamed.
Sheng had to chop several more times before his brother's head finally fell free of his shoulders.  Then he threw the sword aside and collapsed with a howl.
Azula spread her arms wide to welcome the raucous cheers of the crowd.
That night, even after everyone else had gone, Sheng remained outside the palace at the top of the steps, weeping as he knelt in his brother's blood.

Oh my god. That was violent, AND tearjerking. I feel sooooo bad for Sheng. He didn't deserve any of it. Even though Azula forced him to. He may love her, and do whatever he has to do for her, that just seems cruel.

Another great update.

CHAPTER 5:  The Penance of the Guilty

        "Get up, Sheng."
        "Oh, Milady..."
"I command you to get up."
Sheng rose to his feet, his robes dripping with the blood of his brother, Xin.  He wiped a bloody hand across his eyes to brush away his tears, leaving a streak of red on his face.
"Why, Milady?  Why couldn't I have died instead?"
"I would not kill you, Sheng.  I am very pleased with you."
Pleased with me?  You sick, twisted bitch.  Oh, how I hate you!  You toy with me, play with my heart, and you expect me to keep kissing the ground that you walk on?
Trying his best to mask his thoughts, Sheng stood and lowered his head.  He knew Azula's powers of persuasion and seduction, and he would not fall for them.  He looked away from her – (lest she pluck your wandering eye) – focusing instead on his own two feet.
        "Look at me, Sheng."
No.  No, damn you, I will not look at you—
        "I said look at me."
Sheng raised his eyes to behold that radiant beauty that both entranced and repulsed him.  Azula's golden eyes bored into his own, and he felt helpless before her.
"He had to die, Sheng," Azula whispered gently.  She placed a tender hand on his shoulder.  "Xin was a danger to us all.  If I had imprisoned him, his fellow rebels would have stopped at nothing to set him free.  Many great leaders in the past have died because they dismissed their defeated enemies as helpless.  The only way to ensure that he wouldn't remain a threat was to kill him."
Sheng hated himself for admitting it, but Azula was right.  What Azula didn't know, however, was that Renshu, the other leader of the rebellion, was Sheng's older brother as well.
"So," said Azula, "We can expect the rebels to attack in three more days, then.  What else do you know about the enemy, Sheng?  What other information did Xin trust you with?  What else do you know about the resistance... what of their other leader, Renshu?  Did Xin tell you anything about him?"
Sheng bit his lip as his mind raced.
        Tell her nothing.
        She is my Queen.
She made you kill your own brother!
But how can I betray my Queen?
The same way you betrayed your brother, you treacherous bastard!
If I don't tell her everything I know about Renshu...
        Then what?
Then she will find out and kill me!
You deserve death, you coward.  You have already betrayed Xin — don't betray Renshu.
        "Well?" Azula pressed eagerly.
With a sigh, Sheng said, "I know nothing else of the resistance, Milady.  I am sorry, but I don't think that Xin trusted me that much."
Azula's face was the picture of disappointment.  "If I thought that you were lying..."
"Milady, I would never betray you.  I have handed my own brother over to you... If I knew anything else, I would tell."
"Sheng," whispered Azula, "I know that you are loyal.  And I am sorry about your brother.  I regret that he had to be an enemy; he must have been a good man.  He remained brave to the death, and I only wish that my own followers were that way.  I shall give him an honorable burial."
Sheng's eyes widened.  "You mean that, Milady?"
Azula smiled kindly.  "He deserves a proper burial, brave warrior that he was.  Despite his loyalties, you should be proud of him."
        Sheng's heart fluttered.  "Milady!"
"Go and change your clothes, Sheng, and don't drip blood all over the palace.  We will bury him together, just you and me."
Sheng felt tears leaking from his eyes.  "Oh, Milady... thank you... thank you..."
As Sheng ran off to his chamber to change his clothes, Azula sighed and shook her head.  Sheng was so easy to manipulate.  She had his heart on marionette strings, and she was in control.  He was hers forever...
        Until death.

Wow... thank you for all the feedback.  It really means a lot to me.  My amount of readers has suddenly doubled, and I'm thrilled.  Just a note to whoever decides to read this fic:  Please read it from the very beginning if you want my story's finale to have the best effect.

My finale is still several chapters away, however.  By now you can see that the plot is growing ever thicker, and in my newest update, the story will take a swift and sudden, violent turn.

Once again, I appreciate all the feedback.  If you want, I can PM you every time I post a new chapter, if you request it.

Once again, thanks.  Enjoy!

CHAPTER 6: Burial and Confession

In the back courtyard of the palace, Sheng and Azula stood side by side in the shadow of a blossoming cherry tree, and the moonlight shone down on the grayish-black headstone before them.  Twenty minutes previously, one of Azula's Dai Li had carved an inscription into the headstone with the most artistic display of Earthbending that Sheng had ever seen:

                                        HERE LIES XIN ZHI LIN
                                        BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE
                                        RESPECTABLE AND HONORABLE,
                                        DESPITE HIS LOYALTIES

Sheng bowed his head in silent mourning.  Azula was also silent, her hands folded behind her back as she faced the grave that Sheng himself had dug.  The night was silent, save for the burbling of the garden fountains nearby.
After about ten minutes of staring at the grave, Sheng said, "My Queen, I thank you so much for this.  To have Xin buried in the royal courtyard... I cannot express my gratitude."
"It was the least I could do," said Azula compassionately. "Once again, I sincerely regret his death... but you must understand why he had to die."
Sheng wiped his eyes.  "I do, Milady... But not many would have given their enemies  such a decent burial.  I could not ask for more."
"You ask for little," Azula replied with a gentle smile.  "Yet you give so much.  I am very fortunate to have such a servant."
Sheng looked up into those beautiful, golden eyes and smiled back.  "You honor me, Milady."
"Here." Azula gestured at the ground at the base of the cherry tree.  "Sit with me.  I think it is time that we talked."
Sheng's heartbeat drummed faster, and he sat on the patch of ground that Azula had indicated.  His Queen sat down next to him and stared up at the infinite stars that speckled the black heaves.
"Tell me, Sheng..." she said, and her voice trailed off.
After a moment of suspenseful silence, Sheng replied, " Tell you what, Milady?"
Azula turned her face to him, fixing his eyes with her gaze.  "Do you  love me?"
Sheng's heart skipped a beat.  His stomach plummeted.  His throat hitched.  The question had been so sudden that it had caught him off guard.
   "I...I... Milady?" he choked.
Azula continued to stare at him.  "Do you love me?"  she repeated.
"Milady..." Sheng could not think.   His head was whirling with shock and confusion...  Slowly, his mind cleared, and he replied, "Why do you ask?"
His Queen's eyes gleamed in the starlight.  "Why don't you answer?"
Sheng managed to tear his gaze away from Azula's.  "Yes, Milady...  I do.  I love you."
"And why do you love me, Sheng?"
Sheng could hardly breathe.  The night was suddenly very hot, and his pulse hammered in his temples.  Then he spoke, finally confessing the feelings that raged inside of him.  "You... you are brilliant and radiant, My Queen.  You, who conquered Ba Sing Se in twenty-four hours... You are amazing, wise, and more beautiful than any woman I have ever seen... But I could never have you."
   "And why not?"
"You are royalty, My Queen.  I am your lowly servant, unfit to brush dust from the hem of your robe.  I am graced by your presence every day... and I do not deserve it.  I cannot bear it."
Azula leaned close.  "And so you say that you love me... But do you hate me, Sheng?"
"What?  Oh, no, Milady!  I could never hate you.  Every punishment you bestow upon me, every drop of my blood that you spill... I deserve it all, My Queen.  It is the price that I pay for being close to you, and I will gladly pay it again every day for the rest of my life, if you wish it..."
Azula moved closer and placed two fingers to Sheng's lips.  "I wish it."
Before Sheng could reply, Azula leaned forward, wrapping him in her arms and, to his shock, she kissed him...
But no sooner had their lips met than a loud scream cut through the night like a jagged knife.  Shouts rang out from beyond the palace walls, and the sound of clashing swords reached their ears, followed by the crackling of flames as the night sky beyond the courtyard walls erupted in a fiery orange glow.
Azula leaped to her feet, and her eyes blazed with fury.  "The rebel uprising!" she snarled.  "You said that it wouldn't take place for three more days!"
Sheng's mouth hung open in naked disbelief.  "That's what Xin told me...  He... he lied to me!"
"Apparently he didn't trust you as much as you thought," Azula sneered.  "Get up to the palace and alert the Guard Captain.  Now!"
Sheng raced off across the courtyard, his head spinning at the sudden twist of events.
Azula watched him go.  She would never forgive him for this.  She still needed Sheng's love, however.  That was what bound him to her, and tonight she had almost won him over completely and for good.
Alone in the darkness, Azula heard a loud explosion beyond the wall.  In fury she turned and glared at Xin's gravestone.  "You lying b******," she spat, and kicked the stone as hard as he could without breaking her toe.  The small headstone flew five feet before exploding against the wall in a shower of shrapnel and dust.

It's good.

The only thing I don't approve of is the fact that the paragraphs itself aren't spaced out, which gets ME confused. A lot of the...story is actually really one lined paragraphs, but I still see the nice style tied into to it.

It's good work, but Azula seems a bit off key just a tad bit, but I can't put my finger on right.

The OC, I like him. And I think you've created one where some other people might actually have feelings for him, whether it be love or hate, doesn't matter.

The problem with Xin however, was that he was delievered and killed too fast. I didn't really feel the sorrow of a brother killing a brother. Perhaps there should've been a reason other than the fact that Xin was Sheng's brother. This way it would've added more emotion and interest into your fic.

I will continue reading this. It's pretty interesting.

I think those pants do make you look fat.

At the end of the previous chapter, the rebel army launched into action, bringing war to Ba Sing Se once more.  The uprising, as it turns out, is occurring much earlier than either Sheng or Azula had anticipated.

Sheng's head is in a whirl -- one moment he is confessing his heart to his queen, and the next the night is rent by shrieks and the thunder of war beyond the palace walls.  At the head of the rebellion is none other than Sheng's remaining brother, Renshu, the one whom he had decided not to betray over to his queen.  Before this night is over, many fates will be sealed for good, and only one side will be victorious.

I will now put spaces between my paragraphs.  Thanks for the advice.

Now about Azula's character, I agree that she is more brutal than she was in the show.  But this story takes place 8 years after Season Three, so she has grown even crueler than she was before.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHAPTER 7:  War!

The streets of Ba Sing Se were slick with blood.

It had happened without warning; one moment the city had been quiet and tranquil as the denizens of the Middle and Upper Rings slept peacefully without a care in the world.  The next moment, the silence was rent by bloodcurdling screams as a horde of at least four thousand men came charging out of Lower Ring, shouting warcries and surging through the city like a flood.

The Dai Li, whose numbers had increased from about one hundred to eight hundred since the rise of Azula, were taken completely by surprise.  Several of their night patrols had been unfortunate enough to be in the way of the Rebel army, and they were mowed down before they could even fight as the Resistance battled its way into the Upper Ring.

Renshu sat astride one of the Fire Nation's War Lizards, which he had seized from a Fire Nation defender in the Middle Ring.  He drew his blade, screaming, "Freeeeedooooom!" as his men rushed by, charging toward the palace.

Before they could reach their destination, the Rebels were met by a host of palace guards.  The two sides clashed in what was destined to be a short-lived skirmish – the palace guards were  all master Firebenders, but Renshu had sheer numbers on his side.  His ragtag army plowed through the guards and continued onward toward the palace, setting guard towers ablaze and smashing through every wall in their path.

About fifty Dai Li intercepted them at the western gate of the Palace Wall.  Falling into their fighting stances, they pummeled the attackers with boulders and massive clods of earth.  The front rank of the Rebel horde shied back, clawing mud from their eyes as giant rocks hurtled down on them, breaking arms, legs, ribs, and skulls.

"Archers!" bellowed Renshu.  "Cut them down!"

Before the Dai Li could summon up a wall of earth to protect themselves, two hundred deadly shafts shrieked through the night air toward them.  They fell screaming, clutching at the arrows that thudded forcefully into their bodies.  Only one of them survived, and he had fallen to his knees, moaning and tugging at the shaft that had buried itself into his leg. He looked up as a shadow fell over him, and the last thing he saw was Renshu's curved blade as it sliced down at his neck.

The Rebels shouted their triumph to the night and swept forward toward the gate.

                                        *          *          *

Up at the highest window of the palace, Azula watched the battle below.  She dug her fingernails into the wooden windowsill, cursing the fates.

Xin had outsmarted her after all... But she should have suspected something like this to happen, especially since the information about the rebellion had come from none other than the enemy himself!  But Renshu had taken her completely by surprise.

Down below, just as the last of her Dai Li had fallen to the ground in a bloody heap, reinforcements arrived.  They poured from their barracks and engaged the Rebel forces at the gate of the palace itself, along with fourscore mounted War Rhinos that trampled the rebels to pulp underfoot.  She could see Renshu waving his curved  sword in a wide arc over his head, shouting for his men to retreat.  The Rebels  fell back to the Middle Ring to regroup, leaving hundreds of slain men and dozens of burning buildings in their wake.

"They've retreated," she muttered, her voice laden with self-satisfaction.

Behind her, lurking in the corner of the chamber, Sheng ventured a question.

"So... we've won?"

"No," Azula replied.  "I said that they've retreated, not that we've won.  Renshu will be back within the hour, of that I am certain."

"Do you think that you can hold him off again, Milady?"

Azula gave a snort of derision.  "Sheng, I know that I can hold him off again.  And again.  And again, if need be."

"If you say so, Milady."

"He cannot win.  There is a limit to how much damage a man can take before being unable to go on.  We shall test Renshu's endurance to the breaking point.  I hope that he is captured alive; I would like to kill him myself."

Sheng cast his eyes downward.  He would betray no emotions that might give away the fact that Renshu was his brother.  Azula must not know.

"Milady, I am so sorry about that false information.  Xin lied to me – I didn't know..."

"I believe you, Sheng, but you must realize what your little error is costing me."

Sheng fell to his knees.  "Never again, Milady... I will never again fail you.  I beg your forgiveness."

Azula turned away from the window to face him.  "My forgiveness?  Do you deserve it?"

"No," moaned Sheng.  "I am a fool, so easily deceived.  I do not deserve pardon... but I plead for it nonetheless."

There suddenly came a knock at the door.

"Enter," Azula called imperiously.  The door opened and a tall, gaunt man entered the room.  "Milady."

Azula nodded curtly.  "Captain Yi."

Yi  bowed.  "My Queen, we have taken a prisoner, and he is prepared to give information in exchange for his life."

"Well," Azula said, "bring him in."

Yi nodded to a trio of soldiers who stood in the hall beyond.   They entered the room, dragging with them a scraggly, filthy little man whose tattered clothes were soaked in blood.  He gazed up at Azula fearfully.

Azula planted her hands on her hips.  "So, who are you?"

The man replied in a hoarse, ragged voice, "My name is Batu... I have information for you if you grant me my freedom in return."

"Agreed.  Now, what do you have to say?"

Batu licked his dry lips.  "Renshu himself is planning to enter this palace in secret with a score of trained assassins during the second assault.  The first one was meant only to weaken your defenses... and that was why Renshu stayed away from the main battle.  He doesn't want to be killed before he has taken a good shot at your life."

Azula's eyes were wide.  "Really?  Where could he possibly infiltrate my palace?"

"Through the sewers.  He will lead the assassins up through the latrine."

Azula wrinkled her nose in disgust.  "Well, he has determination, I'll give him that.  Now, is that all?"

"Yes," said Batu nervously.  "That is all."

"Well, Sheng," said Azula, "do you think that he's trustworthy?"

Sheng bowed.  "We'll find out soon, Milady."

Batu started at the sound of Sheng's voice. His eyes lit up as recognition dawned.  "I know you!" he cried, pointing at Sheng, whose face had suddenly drained of all color.

"You," Batu went on, "Are Sheng, the brother of Xin and Renshu!  What are you doing here?"

A deadly silence fell upon the room.  Azula's eyes flicked from Sheng to Batu, then back to Sheng again.  "Captain Yi," she said in a dangerous, barely audible whisper, "Take our little friend here back out into the hall.  He is not to be killed, as we agreed.  I will see to him later."

Yi bowed and swept from the room, along with the three guards who were escorting Batu.

The door closed, and the room was now empty except for Azula and Sheng.

The stillness was unbearable.  It carried menace and fury, like the calm before the storm.  Finally, Azula hissed, "You lied to me, Sheng."

Sheng shrunk back against the wall.  "Milady, I never–"

"You said that you knew nothing else of the Rebels.  You never mentioned that Renshu was your brother."  Her voice was quiet and cold, but Sheng would have preferred that she were yelling.

"Milady –"

"Slipped your mind, eh, Sheng?  In all the excitement of today you simply forgot everything you know about Renshu?"

"I–"

"Tell me, Sheng, where do your loyalties lie? "

"With you, Milady!"

"Good.  Then you will tell me everything about Renshu that may be of use to me."

Sheng stared in horror as flames sprang into being at Azula's fingertips, and her eyes flashed like blue lightning.

"You will tell me everything."

Sheng's tortured screams of agony and pleas for forgiveness were so loud that even those outside the palace could hear him as Azula forced him to confess.
