I have made a study of a few of the languages and cultures that inspire the Avatar-verse.

And so I present Hotaru's guide to naming your OC.

First of all, please don't name your character after yourself or one of your Internet handles. Your character is not you. You'll write about them better if you don't. Please do this for my sanity, if nothing else.

If you are looking for interesting culturally appropriate names please take a glance at this handy list.

I'll start with the Water Tribe. The other lists will come soon.

Here are some example names of Inuit origin. I wouldn't change them too much unless you are willing to learn Inuktitut so you don't scramble them. I've picked out some particularly good water tribe names. These are simplifications to an extent.

Anana - beautiful
Aningan - God of the moon
Aput - snow
Arjalinerk - ash (great post FN invasion name!)
Arrluk - killer whale
Buniq - sweet daughter
Cikuq - ice
Cupun - coal
Hey - winter
Illiivat - a person young or old who is learning something
Iluliaq - iceberg
Iluq - frost
Injuquaq - old man
Iqniq - fire (the name given to bright meteors)
Kassuq - drifting lump of ice
Kesuk - water sky
Mangokpok - watery snow
Manirak - smooth stretch of ice
Miki - little
Nanuq - polar bear
Nauja - sea gull
Nukka - younger sister
Nilak - fresh water ice
Onartok - warm
Pukiq - smart
Qaniit  - falling snow
Qannik - snow flake
Qopuk - ice crack
Sesi - snow
Shila - flame
Siku - ice
Suluk - feather
Tatkret - moon
Tikaani - wolf
Tonrar - devil, ghost, spirit
Tullik - yellow billed loon
Ublureak - star
Ulva - wolf
Yakone - red aurora

Also check out these snow names Here
Inuit names have the advantage of being culturally appropriate for the WT.

But since Japanese names are popular in fan fics I present Water Tribe Japanese Names

More common examples:
Kaito - Ocean, constellation, flying
Tsukiko - Moon, girl
Yuzuki - Superiority, Moon
Watatsumi - sea

Here are some building blocks to form names from.

maru- boy (common male name ending)
ko- girl (common female name ending)
umi - sea
mizu - water
yuki - snow
tenka - snow
rikka - snow
uo - fish
aisu - ice
hi - ice
ka - beautiful
ai - love
etsu - joy
jun - pure
kei - strong
o - hero
ki - hope
rou - son
mi - ocean
i - life or reliant

Example
Umikei - Sea, strength
Aiuoko - love, fish, girl

Useful tip ~ First names ending with -ro, -shi, -ya, or -o are typically male first names, while names ending in -ko, -mi, -e and -yo are typically female first names.

Please note that these syllables  can not be melded or changed without seriously changing their meaning as they are constructed from kanji and do not follow a western naming system. Please be aware that this is by no means a definitive list. Diferent kanji in a name can change it completly. But it should be enough for a fic.

A quick flick through google will find you more meanings. Wikipedia is always a good starting point.

Naming is fascinating I hope you can share a little in my enthuiasm. If you find this useful or want to know more plese reply or PM me.

And if in doubt name them Li. There are loads of Lis.

Ingenious. This could cut down on the work we have to do in the Mary-Sue thread. You are very wise.

Now, this deserves a sticky Grin.  I always needed a guide like this to help me ensure I am pertaining to the Avatarverse in my upcoming story.  I'm sure any other aspiring fanfic writer would benefit from this.  Thanks alot for this! Wink  Can't wait to see those updates.

Don't forgot that you can use Latin names as well so they don't have to be all Asian or Inuit, Ursa is the chief example.

Thanks guys. I'm really just cutting down on work for myself and others in the Mary Sue thread, by gathering the information together.

I've tried to keep things fairly simple. Latin names will come under FN as will more Japanese. Chinese will be mostly Earth Kingdom. Air will be miscellaneous and fill in any gaps, and probably have some Indian and African influence too.

Korean names would work well for the Earth Kingdom too. Air could be Tibetan, Nepaliese, or maybe Chinese and Indian as well.

Wow, these are great! This site has some great Japanese and Chinese names as well as several other countries. I get all my names here. Unfortunately, they lack Korean names, so I'm glad you posted some (plus, I don't have to keep asking my friend to translate words into Korean for me ^_^*). Please keep it up!

And thank you for unintentionally explaining to me why Fruits Basket's Uo-Chan's symbol is a fish.

Man, I've been racking my brain trying to think of appropiate names for my own work in progress fanfic. Making up names like Savil, Rexsten, and Darlo won't cut it all the time.

This has been a big help. I wish there was a +rep system here, cuz you deserve it.
